Question 1.

(a) A sample was taken of the salaries of 20 employees of a large pharmaceutical company.
The following are the salaries (in thousands of dollars) for this year:
61 31 42 52 37 47 51 34 42 72 41 60 49 42 77 35 75 67 28 52

(i) Find the 5 number-summary statistics.

(ii) Draw a boxplot for the distribution of salaries for the sample of 20 employees.

(iii) Which measure do you prefer (mean or median) for describing the center of this

distribution? Explain.

(iv) Identify and name any outliers.

Question 2.
(a) A ball is drawn at random from a box containing 6 red balls, 4 white balls, and 5 blue
balls. Determine the probability that the ball drawn is

(i) red

(ii) white

1
(iii) blue

(iv) blue or white

Question 3.
(a) (i) Explain what is meant by discrete and continuous data respectively.

(ii) Explain what is meant by quantitative and categorical variables respectively.

(iii) The following data represents the age of 25 retired people in a healthy lifestyle study:

61 70 81 92 63 71 83 93 64 71 84 95 65 73 84 65 75 87 66 77 88 78 88 78 79

Make a Stem & Leaf Plot of the data listed above.

Question 4.
(a) Determine the probability, 𝑝, for each of the following events:
(i) An odd number appears in a single toss of a fair die.

(ii) At least one head appears in two tosses of a fair coin.

(iii) The sum 7 appears in a single toss of a pair of fair dice.

Question 5.
Events 𝐴 and 𝐵 are such that
1
𝑃𝑟(𝐴) = 12; 𝑃𝑟(𝐴|𝐵 𝑐 ) = 12; 𝑃𝑟(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 8 .

Find
(i) 𝑃𝑟(𝐵)

(ii) 𝑃𝑟(𝐴|𝐵)

(iii) 𝑃𝑟(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵).

Question 6.
(a) Articles made at a factory are subject to three kinds of defects, 𝐴, 𝐵 or 𝐶.

A sample of 1000 articles was inspected and the following results were obtained.

2
31 had a type 𝐴 defect
37 had a type 𝐵 defect
42 had a type 𝐶 defect
11 had both type 𝐴 and 𝐵 defect
13 had both type 𝐵 and 𝐶 defects
10 had both type 𝐴 and 𝐶 defect
6 had all three types of defect.

(i) Find the probability that a randomly selected article from this sample had no more
than one of these defects.
(ii) An article selected at random from this sample had only one defect. Find the
probability that it was a type 𝐵 defect.

Question 7.
A car dealer offers purchasers a three year warranty on a new car. He sells two models, the Zazz
and the Nizz. For the first 50 cars sold for each model the number of claims under the warranty is
shown on the table below.
Claim No Claim
Zazz 35 15
Nizz 40 10

One of the purchasers is chosen at random.

Let 𝐴 be the event that no claim is made by the purchaser under the warranty and 𝐵 the event
that the car purchased is a Nizz.
(i) Find 𝑃𝑟(𝛢 ∩ 𝐵).

(ii) Find 𝑃𝑟(𝐴′).

(iii) Find 𝑃𝑟(𝐵 ′ |𝐴).

Question 8.
(a) Given that
𝑃𝑟(𝐴) = 0.35, 𝑃𝑟(𝐵) = 0.45 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝑟(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 0.13.

(i) Find 𝑃𝑟(𝐴 ∪ 𝐵).

(ii) Find 𝑃𝑟(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵′).

3
(iii) The event 𝐶 is such that 𝑃𝑟(𝐶) = 0.20 and is independent of event 𝐵. Find

𝑃𝑟(𝐵 ∩ 𝐶).

(iv) Given that 𝐴 and 𝐶 are mutually exclusive, draw a Venn diagram to illustrate the

events 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 and the probabilities for each region.

Question 9.
(a) Which of these are categorical or quantitative? For the latter, which are discrete or
continuous?

(i) The distance a car travels in 30 minutes.

(ii) The socio-economic status of persons living in Jamaica.

(iii) The grade level of students in a High School.

(iv) The number of times in one month that a particular car alarm goes off.

Question 10.
(a) The Dean in the FST at U.W.I. wants to know the average age of the lecturers in the faculty
of FST at U.W.I. He takes a random sample of 20 lecturers in the faculty and averages their
ages.
Identify the

(i) population

(ii) sample

(iii) parameter

(iv) statistic

Question 11.
The table below shows the duration of 170 intervals between 171 successive eruptions of the Old
Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, USA. The durations are measured in minutes, to
nearest minute.

4

Lengths of Interval (minutes) Frequency
40-49 9
50-59 34
60-69 19
70-79 53
80-89 46
90-99 8
100-109 1

(i). Draw a histogram to represent the data.

(ii). Estimate the mean and standard deviation of these times (to 3 significant figures).

(iii). Construct a cumulative frequency table and draw an Ogive.

(iv). From the Ogive in part (iii) above, find an estimate for the following:
