Linux Kernel Versions

The Linux kernel is the operating system kernel used by the Linux family (Unix-like operating
systems).

The Linux kernel is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) and is
developed by contributors worldwide.

The Linux kernel was initially conceived and created by Finnish computer science student Linus
Torvalds in 1991.

The Linux kernel has received contributions from thousands of programmers worldwide.

All Linux distributions released have been based upon the Linux kernel.

Command to find out my kernel distributor version --


$ uname -r
or
$ cat /proc/version

2.6.22-14-generic
Where,
 2 : Kernel version
 6 : The major revision of the kernel
 22 : The minor revision of the kernel
 14 : Immediate fixing / bug fixing for critical error
 generic : Distribution specific sting. For example, Redhat appends string such as EL5 to
indicate RHEL 5 kernel.

$ cat /etc/issue
or
$ cat /etc/lsb-release

Command to find out my OS is 32 bit or 64 bit -


$ file /usr/bin/file

command to find out my OS kernel image name -


$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image
