Networking
A network is a group of two or more computer systems linked together.
Networking is the study of computer systems that are linked together to
exchange information and share resources. Networking is used to connect
multiple computers to share information and resources.
In networking computers are connected through Cables or Radio waves with the
help of Wi-Fi. Usually there are two types of networking:
1. Local-Area Network (LAN): The computers are closed together in the
same building and are connected through cables.
2. Wide-Area Network (WAN): The computers are farther apart and
connected by telephone lines or radio waves.
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A network spanning a physical area
larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, such as a city. A MAN is
typically owned and operated by a single entity such as a government
body or large corporation.
Networking is done for the following reasons:
1. To share Resources from one computer to another.
2. To create files and store them in one computer, access those files from the
other computers connected over the network.
3. To connect a printer, scanner, or a fax machine to one computer within
the network and let other computers of the network use the machines
available over network.
4. Administrators, instructors, and even students and guests can be
connected using the campus network.
5. We can provide network users with access to the internet, via an internet
gateway.
6. Teams can also work cooperatively connected through the network.
7. Networking helps you to find people with lots of business experience who
are often very willing to share their knowledge with you.
8. Networks allow users to communicate using e-mail, newsgroups, and
video conferencing etc.
9. To play multi-users network games to play from different locations.
Windows File Sharing
If you want to perform a one-time file transfer to someone across the room or
over the same network, you can use the Share option:
1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
2. Browse to the folder with files that you want to share.
3. Select the one, multiple, or all the files (Ctrl + A).
4. Click the Share tab.
5. Click the Share button
Quick Tip: You can also right-click your selection and click the Share option in
the context menu.
6. Select the sharing method, including:
1. Email.
2. Nearby sharing.
3. Microsoft Store app.
7. Continue with the on-screen directions to share the content.
If you're looking to share files with nearby devices, you need to make sure that
Nearby sharing is setup and configured correctly on your machine as well as
on the destination device. Nearby sharing is available on computers running
the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and later that use compatible Bluetooth
adapters.
How share a folder using File Explorer
In order to quickly share a folder with users on the local network, do the following:
1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
2. Browse to the folder you want to share.
3. Right-click the folder, select Give access to, and click the Specific people option.
4. In the "Network access" wizard, use the drop-down menu, select the users you
want to share the folder and its content:
o Individual user — If you select an existing account, the user must provide
username and password to access the files.
o Everyone — Allows to share content with anyone in the network without the
need to enter a password to access the files.
5. Click the Add button.
6. Using the "Permission Level" drop-down menu, select how users will be
accessing content in the shared folder:
o Read — Users can list and open files, but they're not allowed to modify or delete
existing files and folder. Also, they won't be able to upload or create new files
and folders.
o Read/Write — Users can list, open, modify, delete, upload, and create new files
and folders.
o Remove — Restricts access to a user or group of users to the folder.
7. Click the Share button.
After completing the steps, the wizard will give you the link that network users
can use to access the folder and its content.
Note: When sharing a folder, bear in mind that users will only be able to access
the files if the device making the sharing is turned on and connected to the
network.
Accessing a shared folder
Once you have the unique path, there are at least two ways to access the shared
folder. You can copy and paste the link in the File Explorer address bar, or you
can navigate to the folder using the "Network" page listed in the left pane of File
Explorer.
Cloud Computing
In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and
programs over the Internet instead of your computer's hard drive. The cloud is
just a metaphor for the Internet. Cloud computing is taking services ("cloud
services") and moving them outside an organization's firewall. Applications,
storage and other services are accessed via the Web. The services are delivered
and used over the Internet and are paid for by the cloud customer on an as-
needed or pay-per-use business model.
How to share files using OneDrive
Although you can also use File Explorer to share files stored on OneDrive with
other people, the steps are a little different:
1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
2. Browse to the OneDrive folder that includes the files you want to share.
3. Right-click the file, and click the Share a OneDrive link option.
Once you've completed the steps, a unique link to the file will be created and
copied to the clipboard. You can now right-click, paste, and send the link to the
content using email, online service, or another type of messaging service.
Customizing OneDrive sharing options
In the case that you want to customize the sharing options or share the files with
multiple people, you can do the following:
1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E).
2. Browse to the OneDrive folder that includes the files you want to share.
3. Right-click the file, and click More OneDrive sharing options.
4. Using the sharing options, you'll be able to:
o Allow editing.
o Set expiration date.
o Set password.
o Get a copy of the link.
o Send link via email.
o Share link in social media services.
Lab Tasks
1. Share a file with everyone on the same network using file explorer. Make
sure nobody can modify the file.
2. Share a file on OneDrive using advanced sharing options.
