🖥 COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM
A computer system is made up of four main components that work
together to perform tasks:
1. Hardware
🔹 Definition:
The physical components of a computer that you can touch.
🔹 Examples:
Input Devices – Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, Microphone
Output Devices – Monitor, Printer, Speakers
Storage Devices – Hard Drive, SSD, USB Flash Drive
Processing Devices – CPU (Central Processing Unit), GPU (Graphics
Processing Unit)
Other Peripherals – Webcam, Projector, External Drives
🔹 Key Function:
Enables the computer to receive input, process data, and produce output.
2. Software
🔹 Definition:
The set of programs or instructions that tell the computer what to do.
🔹 Types of Software:
System Software – Manages hardware and runs the system (e.g.,
Windows, macOS, Linux)
Application Software – Used by the user to perform tasks (e.g., MS
Word, Excel, Chrome)
Utility Software – Helps maintain, analyze, and optimize performance
(e.g., antivirus, disk cleanup)
🔹 Key Function:
Controls and coordinates the hardware and enables user interaction.
3. Peopleware
🔹 Definition:
The human element of a computer system—those who use, design,
program, or maintain the system.
🔹 Examples:
End Users (students, employees, gamers)
IT Professionals (technicians, developers, engineers)
System Administrators, Data Analysts
🔹 Key Function:
Provides input, interprets output, maintains and improves systems.
4. Operating System (OS)
🔹 Definition:
A special type of system software that acts as the interface between the
user, hardware, and software.
🔹 Functions of the OS:
Manages hardware resources (CPU, memory, storage)
Provides a user interface (GUI or CLI)
Runs and manages applications
Handles system security and file management
🔹 Examples:
Desktop OS – Windows, macOS, Linux
Mobile OS – Android, iOS
📌 How They Work Together:
The user (peopleware) gives input using hardware (keyboard,
mouse).
The software processes the input through the operating system.
The output is displayed through an output device (e.g., monitor).
