Study progress
The Erasmus University Rotterdam, your recognised sponsor, is obliged to make sure that you as a
student meet the requirements in order to maintain your residence permit.
One of the conditions to maintain your Dutch study residence permit, is study progress monitoring*.
You must earn at least 50% of your required ECTS each academic year. The Erasmus University
Rotterdam (EUR) as your recognised sponsor, is required to track your study progress and report to
the IND if you fail to meet this requirement—unless you have reported valid exceptional personal
circumstances*. If you don’t meet the 50% ECTS rule, your study residence permit may be revoked.
* Exceptional personal circumstances as referred to in Article 7.51 WHW and Article 2.1 of
the WHW Implementation Decree (Dutch: Wet op Hogeronderwijs en Wetenschappelijk
onderzoek).
** Study progress monitoring is a condition by virtue of Article 4.20 lid 1 sub e of the Aliens
regulation 2000 (Dutch: Voorschrift Vreemdelingenwet 2000) as referred to Article 6.5 and
6.6 of the Code of Conduct for International students in Higher education.
• First Year Bachelor Students:
EUR applies a Binding Study Advice (BSA) system for all bachelor programs. The BSA
requirement takes priority over the 50% ECTS rule, so make sure you understand what this
means for you!
• Important Information for Pre-Master Students:
If you are enrolled in a pre-master (preparatory year) program, you must earn all ECTS from
your pre-master courses and gain admission to your master's program. Failing to meet these
requirements may affect your study residence permit. Make sure to stay on track with your
studies.
• Exchange Students Exempted:
The study progress monitoring requirement does not apply to exchange students who stay
in the Netherlands for a short period (one year or less).
Consequences
If you do not make sufficient study progress, we will deregister you with the IND and your study
residence permit may be revoked. Erasmus University Rotterdam will no longer be your recognised
sponsor, and you won’t be able to apply for a new or extended residence permit via the EUR.
If you want to stay in the Netherlands, you will need to either apply for a different type of residence
permit or transfer to another institution. If you wish to switch to another study program within
Erasmus University, you must still earn at least 50% of your required credits this year to remain eligible.
Take your responsibility
Please make sure to stay on track with your studies to avoid any issues with your residence status.
We will send you reminders during the year about the study progress condition, but it’s your own
responsibility to keep track of your study results and in the case of personal circumstances, schedule
an appointment with a student advisor and student counselor ahead of time.

Timeframe
The academic year runs from September 1st to August 31st. After each academic year, Erasmus
University Rotterdam (EUR) will assess your study progress.
However, if we notice that you are falling behind or believe that you may be misusing the purpose of
your study permit for any reason during the year, we are required to inform the Dutch Immigration
and Naturalization Service (IND). This could result in consequences, including the revocation of your
residence permit.
To ensure your residence permit stays valid, it’s important to meet the academic requirements and
use your study permit for its intended purpose.
Declaration of intent:
