CHAPTER-I
Introduction
1.1 Background
Social media networking refers to the use of online space by students to connect, share, interact,
establish, or maintain connections with others for academic and socialization objectives. Social
media are computer-mediated technologies that allow students to produce, share, and exchange
information, ideas, photographs, and videos for virtual communities and learners (1).

Social media is described as any digital tools or programs that allow users to interact socially and
differ from traditional media (for example, television). This definition of "social media" includes
social networking sites (for example, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok , text messaging and
messaging applications, social gaming tools, YouTube, and others (2).

Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus are being used in learning for the purpose of
convenient communication with other students and potentially with others outside the class such as
students of the same topic and subject experts (3).

The words “Internet” “Social Media” are familiar terms to everyone in this 21st century. With the
evolution of SM sites, the way of interacting and communicating has taken a new pathway. People
are socializing, connecting more and more in different pattern from that of traditional ones (4).

World health organization (Who) defines Mental health as “a state of well-being in which the
individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work
productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (5)

Although social media has helped us connect to the world, its overuse can lead to serious health
problems like depression, anxiety, mania, eating disorders, sleep deprivation, insecurity, FOMO (Fear
of missing out), internet addiction, and other anti-social behaviors (6).

Social media has surprised the world and it has many effect among which only few are found and
many are still left to be researched. The effect of social media has been found both positive and
negative. It has been important to teach young generations the do and donts of using social media
and to use it in balanced way along with other essential of life like study, physical exercise and
nutrition. Different researches claim that social media effects our memory, anxiety, suicide rates,
depression rates along with other physical problems and eye problems (7)

6
Social media has more negative than positive effects. Because nowadays students spend more time
on social media for reasons other than education like posting pictures, unnecessary surfing etc which
causes distraction from the learning environment, affecting their academic progress. Spending too
much time on social networking sites can also lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a decrease in daily
physical activity . Social media also makes people image conscious are many people flaunt their lavish
lifestyles there and also share their pictures in certain way to show themselves fairer, fit, healthier
and wealthier. A large part of social media is projecting a self-image that will receive social currency
in the form of recognition from friends via likes, positive comments, or shares (8).

Social media addiction is one of the biggest problems of our age that we face. Social media addiction
can be expressed as a psychological problem which causes problems such as occupation, emotion
modification, relapse and conflict in many areas of daily life such as private, business/academic,
interpersonal in person's life by progressing with cognitive, affective and behavioral processes ( 9).

Adolescents are individuals between 10–19 years of age, who easily swayed by emotions and
perceive relatively small things as a big issue due to which their psychology is affected. Adolescents
take interest in new things and get easily habituated to it leading to addiction. The access and use of
social media are increasing rapidly among adolescents in Nepal (10).

7
1.2 Problem statement
The effects of social media are currently topic of study in research for over decade of time.
The excessive use of social media can have worst effect on mental health as well as physical
health and also can bring change in behaviour as well.

Global scenario
The use of social networking sites for longer period of time leads to various problems like
eyesight problem, back pain due to sitting in same position for longer period of time. A
survey of college students was conducted during the Fall Semester of 2019 to better
understand how these health issues affect students at Midwestern University in the US.
According to researchers, the benefits and drawbacks of social media affect us in ways we
may not yet understand. As a result of the risks and uncertainties associated with the
unknown future effects of social media on generation Z, additional research is required (11).

According to a recent survey, 22% of adolescents access their preferred social networking sites more
than ten times per day, and the majority of young people access SNS more than once per day.
Phones are used by 75% of young people today, with 25% using them for social media, 54% for
messaging, and 24% for instant messaging (12)The impact of internet-based life is dependent on its
use if an individual uses too much social media as well as whatever can harm him. According to
Parmar (2018), in the twenty-first century, youth have been investing their energy in various social
contraptions, averaging 12-15 hours per day on stimulation media such as phones, PCs,
workstations, TVs, and other devices. They use these devices to access WhatsApp, YouTube,
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other services. According to 2019 statistics 2.7 billion people used
Facebook, Instagram, or Messenger each month, with over 2.1 billion using at least one daily. More
than one billion of them were active Facebook users, making it the most visited website (12).

The current global internet user population is estimated to be over 4.1 billion by 2020, accounting
for 60% of the global population. Social media is a major reason why the vast majority of people use
the internet. According to Saudi Arabian statistics, nearly 58% of all citizens use the internet (13).

National scenario

The rate of social media users is high in Nepal among which are mostly students. In Nepalese
students' problems like poor sleep quality, internet addiction and depression are highly seen.

8
According to study done among Nepalese under graduate student 35.4% of students exceeded
validated cut off scores for poor sleep quality, 35.4% for internet addiction, and 21.2% for
depression, respectively. Poorer sleep quality was associated with being younger, not drinking
alcohol, being Hindu, being sexually active, and failing the previous year's board exam. Higher
internet addiction was associated with being younger, being sexually inactive, and failing the
previous year's board exam. Depressive symptoms were more prevalent in students who were older,
sexually inactive, had failed the previous year's board examination, and had completed fewer years
of study. According to statistics, internet addiction mediated 16.5% of the indirect effect of sleep
quality on depressive symptoms. In contrast, sleep quality statistically mediated 30.9% of the
indirect effect of internet addiction on depressive symptoms (14).

1.3 Rationale of study

Social media networking refers to online space that is used by students to connect, share,
interact, establish, or maintain connections with others for academic and socialization
objectives. Social media are computer-mediated technologies that allow students to produce,
share, and exchange information, ideas, photographs, and videos for virtual communities and
learners.

There are several reasons because of which studying the effects of social media on students
academic performance and mental health is important especially in this periods. As we all
know how social media has become an integral part of live especially childrens and how they
spend a significant amount of time on these platforms. Spending maximum time on SM
affects ability to focus academic work and perform well in school in students.

Everything has two sides, likewise social media also have both positive and negative effects.
While it can be a source of support and connection for some students, excessive use or
negative interactions on these platforms can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and
depression in many.

Excessive use of SNS or social media addiction can effect both physical and mental health. It
can lead to poor concentration in student along with problem in eye and can also cause back
problem if used by remaining in same position for long time. It can also cause stress,
depression, anxiety in adolescents.

9
So it is must to conduct study in this topic especially among adolescent and school student
especially 8,9 and 10 as adolescent is phase where an individual goes through various change
in their body not only physically but also emotionally .Adolescents are not aware or we can
say they are not able to differentiate between right and wrong. So during this time, excessive
use of Social media or SNS can lead them into various problems and they may get into wrong
things. So it is must to aware them about these things.

They also must be awared that social media can be used in productive way to develop skill or
for learning new things.

During my study, I found that there has not been many study on this topic especially in
adolescent or school students. So in order to aware adolescents about various positive and
negative effects of social media on not only academic but also their mental health, I have
chosed this topic to conduct study on.

Literature review

Introdution

A literature review is an essential part of an entire research process which is the combination
of the available literature regarding the topic to be studied. The combination merges the
conclusion of many different sources to explain the overall understanding of the topic, thus
laying a foundation for both the research question and primary research.

The main aim of this literature review process was to review articles related to “effect of
social media on students academic and their mental health” and to organize those articles in
systematic way.

Source of information

I have used google scholar for searching articles along with mendely.

Search strategy

Terms such as “social media addiction” “social media effect in academics” “social media and
mental health” “impact of social media academics Nepal” were used to search all databases
using title and in Mendeley to create library of sufficient related article. Total no. of articles
retrieved after excluding irrelevant and with no access to full text-75 and total no of articles
reviewed-36. The review included following three phases: identifying relevant literature,
selection of literature, and summarizing results.

Findings of literature review

A descriptive study was conducted among top 2 universities in Chennai with a sample of 90
respondents in 2020. The study showed that 21.7% of students were using social networking

watching serials. this study found that, there was an association between time spent on social
media and the number of social networking sites. the study also found that day by day

13
consumption of media negatively affected the children, preteens, and adolescents by making
them increasingly inclined to depression, anxiety, and other mental issues, just as making
them progressively defenseless to future medical issues. In this study, the result showed that
there was an association between usage of social media and the number of social networking
sites. The study also found that there was a difference between number of social networking
