CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Social media has become part of society's daily lives, shaping how people

connect, communicate, and perceive the world. While it offers incredible opportunities to

stay connected with friends and inform the people about what’s happening around

them, share ideas, and also to access information, it has good benefits to the society,

however, it also has a bad impact on the mental state and well-being of a person. The

constant stream of content can lead to comparison, creating unrealistic standards that

can affect our self-esteem and body image. The people often see only the highlights of

others’ lives, which can make them feel like they are not doing enough or failing behind.

Social media has the greatest bad impact on our lives, it can destroy the way people

think, communicate, and social media might lead people not to appreciate things around

them. It can impact the people’s focus, critical thinking, and productivity (UC Davis

Health, 2024).

It becomes harder to disconnect, leading to increased stress and anxiety. As

stated by Hou et al. (2019) and James (2019), social media addiction is real among

young learners. Social media is a technology wherein young students have been

distracted in social media, yet, many students may have time management problems

(James, C., 2019) as they have become addicted to the use of social media to the

extent that the students care little or nothing about their studies. For this reason,

students spend their whole time on social media without doing or managing their time.

While it benefits the society by communicating with other people and to inform them of
what's happening in the world, as per the Addiction Centre (2019), a lot of students are

addicted to social media and their time management is being destroyed. It’s important to

remember that social media is just a tool— it can be used for good or bad depending on

how we approach it. By being mindful of social media consumption and setting healthy

boundaries, the world can enjoy the benefits without falling into its traps which time

management can help the society to divide their precious time. Using social media

should have time management because without managing the time, it might lead us to

lose the desire in life or one’s mental health (Walters, M., 2022).

Social media can impact time management, especially among youth. Setting

limits on social media use can improve well-being and attention. A study showed that a

50% reduction in social media time did not significantly affect attention or well-being

compared to a 10% reduction. However, self-awareness among young people is

increasing, with 46% of 15 to 24 year-olds recognizing the need for a social media

break to benefit mental health (Meg Walters 2022; Wezel et al. 2021). Social media can

affect time management by reducing productivity and increasing distractions. It can also

be affecting the students’ academic performance or personal life, it can interfere with

their sleep schedules because students frequently browse late into the night, which

impairs their ability to concentrate and their general well-being, an inability to gain

proper concentration, avoidance of responsibilities, and laziness. This is about students

having control over their time more than time having control over them, many students

wasting their time by using social media such as Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram and video

games, all day (Koessmeier C., Büttner O.B., 2021).

Therefore, the goal of this research is to explore how senior high school students

affect their academic performance, desire in life, and their time management. How

students lack time management, procrastinate, and lose motivation to study because of

what they see on social media. To gain knowledge how students manage their time

when it comes to using social media, if they were using gadgets all day without doing

anything and how it affects them and why.

Related Literature and Studies

The impact of social media on time management among Senior High School

students. According to numerous findings that highlight that social media has a big

impact on the time management of some Senior High School students, giving more

information about their surroundings and what is happening inside their society.

Although having that positive regard, it also has negative effects on students. Social

media can take their attention and make them not be able to finish their schoolwork and

assignments, which can have an effect on their academic performance and lead to poor

grades (Williams, 2024; Musah et al., 2016).

While Dr. Dohkoh (2018) highlights parental concerns about social media’s

negative impact on students’ analytical skills, Dennison Curtis (2019), on the other

hand, found that students utilize social media for educational purposes, suggesting a

more nuanced relationship. Moreover, according to Dennison Curtis (2019), who

studied 200 Senior High School students, the study shows that the respondents use

Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Google+, and Messenger more

often. This shows how students spend more time on social media to the extent of

sharing educational information, sharing study materials, for entertainment purposes,

and for communicating, hence contradicting Dr. Donkoh (2018) claim that social media

can give students the incapability of making independent and critical analyses of issues

and events. There are a lot of factors influencing the time management of students.

Research conducted by Twenge and Campbell (2019) shows that a direct

connection of high screen time can affect academic performance, which comes from no

time management and no control over its use. This sleep disruption often results in

diminished ability to manage academic and personal responsibilities effectively. Hours

set off a sleep loss pattern that may lead to drowsiness in the students, which also

impacts their behavior and mood and may possibly raise the risk of accidents or injuries.

Addiction to social media can also have a significant impact on the students' time

management and can lead to bad academic performance.

According to Benedicto Mindajao (2021), who studied the students from Butuan

City School of Arts and Trade (BCSAT), 513 senior high school students have social

media accounts, and the results show that 294 out of 513 are social media addicts. The

majority of social media addicts are female, 18 years of age. The impact of social media

on time management among senior high school (SHS) students is substantial and

multifaceted. Through examination it shows that online social media tools have many

benefits to education, Social media enhances communication and interaction between

students and teachers thanks to this advantage students and teachers can now

communicate within or between classes

While social media offers a lot of benefits, such as access to educational

resources and communication (Purwanto et al. 2023) using it too much has been shown

to interfere with the students' ability to effectively manage their time, leading to negative

academic outcomes.

Theoretical Framework

Twenge and Campbell (2019), their theory focuses on how social media

encourages young people to become more self-centered. They argue that platforms like

Instagram and TikTok make students seek validation and attention from others through

likes and comments, it can therefore affect students’ time management as they may

spend time on social media rather than focusing on their academic responsibilities and

personal life.

While, Dennison Curtis (2019), it emphasizes that social media can cause stress,

feeling of loneliness, or anxiety. and distract students from concentrating on their

academic work also can make it hard to focus, leading to poor time management and

difficulty balancing their responsibilities.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework integrates two key theories to understand the

relationship between Social Media and Time Management among SHS students.

Twenge and Campbell Theory highlight that these platforms such as Tiktok and

Instagram have a big impact and can become addictive and affect student’s time

management. While Dennison, emphasizes social media loneliness, and anxiety while
also disrupting their time management, as learners might spend hours online instead of

studying.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter tackles the research design, research locale, respondents/sampling

research instrument.
Research Design

Qualitative data is usually gathered in the field from smaller sample sizes, which

means researchers might personally visit participants in their own homes or other

environments (National Library of Medicine, n.d).

This study will use descriptive research design through interviews to understand

student’s experiences and perceptions. By talking directly to students, the researcher

can gather firsthand insights about the challenges they face and how they feel about

them. These conversations will help capture their thoughts, emotions, and personal

stories, providing a clearer and more detailed understanding of their experiences. Since

the study aims to describe these real-life situations, using interviews is the best way to

bring out their voices and perspectives (McCombes S., 2023).

Research Locale

This study will be conducted at Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, main

campus. Specifically, the Senior high school department. A highly urbanized school

located at Montilla Blvd., Butuan City, Agusan Del Norte, Caraga Region.

The interviews were conducted with the respondents on the campus at times

convenient for them. The selection of SJIT Senior High School for the study was

strategic among the (HUMSS) Humanities on Social and Sciences, (STEM) Science

Technology Engineering Mathematics, (GAS) General Academic Strand, (ABM)

Accountancy Business Management.

This choice was informed by being selected due to its convenience and populous

institution and its strategic location that allows access to a diverse population of senior
high school students, making it suitable for conducting this study on the impact of social

media on time management habits of Grade 11 and 12 learners.

Respondents of the Research & Sampling Method

The respondents of this study are 8 selected Senior High students from Saint

Joseph Institute of Technology. Since the study focuses on social media’s impact on

time management, we will use convenience sampling to select students who actively

gather data from readily available students who meet the study’s criteria. By doing so,

we ensure that the responses are relevant to our research objectives while maintaining

accessibility and practicality in data collection.

The researchers will be using non-probability sampling which is a sampling

method that uses non-random criteria like the availability, geographical proximity, or

expert knowledge of the individuals you want to research in order to answer a research

question (Nikolopoulou, 2022).

Specifically, the researchers will be using convenience sampling where units are

selected for inclusion in the sample because they are the easiest for the researcher to

access (Nikolopoulou, 2022).

Research Instrument

This study utilizes a structured interview as the primary data collection method.

To ensure clarity and relevance, the interview questions are based on reviewed

literature, aligned with the research objectives and statement of the problem.
Furthermore, open-ended questions will allow respondents to express their thoughts

freely.

To ensure the validity and readability of the interview data, the researcher will

apply standardized interview protocols to maintain consistency and accuracy. A sample

of the interview questions is provided in the appendix to illustrate the type of data to be

collected. Moreover, the researcher is able to cover all the questions that are relevant to

the study.

It was observed that there were sufficient Items to gather information on in order

to address every facet of the issue and provide answers to every particular query raised

by the statement of the problem.

Ethical Consideration

The ethical considerations outlined by Bryman and Bell (2007) will be used by

the researcher. Participants in this study will not experience any harm as a result of their

participation. The participants, who are the students of Saint Joseph Institute of

Technology (SJIT), will give their full consent prior to the study. Furthermore, the

confidentiality of research participants will be protected. Additionally, students are free

to leave the study at any time if they want to.

A high level of secrecy will be ensured when processing the data, and any kind of

false information will be prevented, as well the biased portrayal of main data findings.

Finally, all correspondence on this study shall be honest and open.

Data Gathering Procedure

In this study, the method used to gather information is an interview questionnaire.

The interview questions are all about the perspective and experience of the Senior high

School students of SJIT, Main campus.

Firstly, the researchers ask for permission to conduct the interview and to use

voice recording to record their answers. The researchers have a quota on how many

senior high school students to interview.

The interview will begin once the interviewee is ready. The researcher will use

voice recordings to gather all the information.

Hence, as the interview is finished, the researcher will collect, keep, and analyze

all the information gathered.

Chapter III

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter shows the results and findings of the study. The researchers

collected the data and were tabulated, analyzed and interpreted.

3.1 Social Media Usage During Study Time

Five out of eight stated that social media can be helpful during study sessions.

They explained that it gives them easy access to helpful resources like videos, posts or

they can search about the topics that they are studying. However, 3 out of eight

participants also stated that they were distracted while studying because of social

media, they barely can focus since they were addicted to each platform such as Tiktok,

facebook and Instagram. One students Mentioned that:

“So, it depends on my mood, because there are times when I'm on my phone,

especially when there are new issues. I don’t want to study because I prefer that way”

This shows that students' use of social media during study time is influenced by their

mood and current interest. She mentioned that when something new or interesting

happens, she tends to get distracted by their phone and having no time management.

This shows that it can disrupt concentration and make them forget what they are

supposed to do. It takes their attention away from important tasks. It can make the

students’ lose track of their responsibilities.

3.1.1. Social Media as a Motivational Tool or It Being a Distraction

Six out of eight admitted that social media has a big impact on our lives. they

stated that social media can be helpful to our academics or social life, they also said
that social media can be a motivation. And someone said that social media can be a

distraction to the young students. Two student stated that:

“It helped me in broadening my knowledge across the subjects.” and “it has a

negative impact like losing time management”

One student mentioned that social media can be a source of knowledge by

providing easy articles, news, videos and discussion which made it easier to gain more

knowledge. However, one student pointed out that social media can also have negative

effects, it can be fake news, addiction, and losing our time management.

3.1.2 Social Media and Task Management

Five out of eight admitted that they manage their time well and have no messed

up deadline task and they are not into social media, while the three participants were

into social media as well they were having a struggle about the deadline task and

messed up activities or household chores. One participant stated:

“I totally forgot that i have something to do because i was distracted doing

something that gave me so much fun”

Students nowadays are being distracted and being procrastinated by social

media and yet some of them are struggling to meet deadlines for the activities that have

messed up. One of their biggest distractions is social media.

3.2. Social Media in a Time management for Studying

Eight out of eight admitted that they manage their time well and they don’t use

social media for personal interest but for academic purposes, they usually set

boundaries between social life and academic life. One person stated that:

“Social media helps, me because it provides motivation, like, to study and be a

better version of myself”

Therefore, social media with having time management for studying is the most

important as a learner since having that has a big impact on us, it will help determine

what to do next or being a wise student . Learners nowadays are using social media for

motivation and for their academic performance.

Chapter IV
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this chapter, the researcher will present the summary of their findings from the

answers from their respondents, their conclusions about these findings, and the

recommendations of the researchers to the beneficiaries of this research.

Summary of the Study

This study focused on investigating the Impact of social media on time

management on senior high school students' learning engagement. This seeks to

understand how social media affects our time management and our academic

performance, this will be explored at Saint Joseph Institute of Technology, Main

campus. The previously mentioned study utilized Phenomenological-Qualitative

research design to analyze the perceptions, opinions, and experiences by the

respondents towards social media on time management and academic performance

and evaluate how students feel about the relationship between social media and the

time management of young learners and how these factors influence their academic

performance in class. This approach allows the researcher to gain knowledge by

exploring and to understand their experiences. On the other hand, in selecting

participants for data gathering, the researchers used Quota-Sampling in order to limit

the participants. Particularly, the researchers aimed at the senior high school students

to gain knowledge of young students.

Before the interviews, the researcher provided a consent form to the chosen

participants and each participant agreed to answer the questions. All information

collected, including their identities, was kept private and was used only for academic
purposes only. The study used Quota-Sampling to choose 8 participants who were

willing to take part of the interview.

An interview guide was created to organize the questions and discussion in a

clear way, to gain insight and to understand the students behavior, thoughts and

opinions. Most importantly, students engage in learning.

Summary of Findings

This research aimed to understand how the young learners affect their learning,

study habits and time management at SJIT senior high school students, main campus.

As we go deeper into this approach, we will gain knowledge about their behavior,

thoughts and experiences that they have encountered.

Therefore, students nowadays are too distracted, procrastinating, and being

addicted to social media platforms, such as facebook, instagram and tiktok. On the

other hand, they also set boundaries or limits by using social media. Based on 8

participants, social media has a bad impact yet good impact as what they have stated

while interviewing them. Furthermore, it looks at how social media shapes students'

motivation and critical thinking. The following are the summary and conclusions of the

answers of the participants.

I. What are the experiences of senior high school students in engaging on

social media during studying?

Senior High School students experience both positive and negative impacts

when using social media while studying. Some of the common problems they faced
include procrastinations, distractions, and even addiction. This makes it hard for them to

focus on their studies, and leads to struggles to meet deadlines. On the other hand,

social media also can help students to relax and can be used as tools while studying if

they set their time well. The researcher found that despite all the distractions,

procrastination, addiction and struggles, there are also its benefits. Hence, both have

good sides and bad side learning.

II. How does social media affect students in terms of:

a. Productivity

Being productive can make a lot of things done as well as we’ve learned how to

stay organized, manage our time, and avoid distractions so we can meet our goals

without rushing. The researcher found out that during tasks they were productive and

well-organized but at the same they are fully productive because in their mind, social

media still exist, in that way, they can’t fully focus. However, some of the participants

said that she doesn’t use social media for social life but for news or school purposes

only.

b. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Able to decide which tasks are the most important and need to be done first as

well as making sure they are completed on time. The researcher found that some of

them lack the ability to prioritize things because they are distracted easily and they are

rushing or cramming to get things done because they forgot that they have something

important to do, due of having no time limit of using social media platforms such as

tiktok, facebook and instagram.

III. What strategies do senior high school students utilize to manage their time

effectively in studying while engaging on social media at the same?

Senior High School Students can manage their time between studying and social

media by using simple strategies. The researcher found that they usually limit their time

while engaging on social media and the majority of the participants feel more inspired,

motivated by using social media as a tool of planner. As one of the participants stated

that she barely uses social media because it helps her get distracted from social media,

she used a mobile phone as a tool for managing her time during studying.

IV. How does social media help students in managing time in terms of:

a. Reviewing for a test

The researcher found that social media helps them to motivate themselves while

reviewing for less stress, and can make their mind relax for a while. However, some

participants say that Students can use time management to improve their study skills.

Time management usually involves students monitoring their own efforts and actions,

have an appropriate sense of urgency to complete assignments

b. Doing school work

The research found out that social media can help them do school work or can

help them for school purposes, yet, can make them feel relaxed as well as it can be

used as motivation such as music, videos, and information. Whereas young learners

nowadays are depending on social media which has its effect on time management.
Conclusion

This study observed the experiences and perception of young learners of SJIT

on how social media affects time management and academic performance as well as

outside of the school. The conclusion of the findings for the six research questions

regarding the influence of social media on time management and academic

performance on grade 11 and 12 senior high school students are based on the insights

gathered from the interviews with the participants. From the study's results, the following

conclusions can be made:

1. It is included that social media can positively impact students' study habits, it

helps them find information quickly, take necessary breaks, and stay motivated.

The use of social media also can boost young learners' knowledge and it creates

positive learning, increases focus, and improves academic performance,

however, they are being independent due to depending on social media.

2. The key factor in how social media affects academic performance seems to be

how it is used, those who use it responsibly and with discipline find it beneficial,

while those who get distracted may struggle to stay focused and it leads to

rushing things. Therefore, social media's impact on academics depends largely

on the individual's ability to manage their usage.

3. The role of social media in students' lives can be complex. While it offers good

intentions and serves good beneficiaries as well can be a source of motivation by

inspiring videos, learning opportunities, and connection of young learners, it also

has a potential to distract themselves from their academic goal, time, and doing

household chores.
4. It is contained that young learners highlight the diversity of experience and

perception on social media which can affect their ability to meet academic

deadlines and complete tasks, while some of the learners struggle with

distractions, leading to messed up tasks and rushing deadlines. On the other

hand, some of the learners also have the knowledge and mindset to manage

their time efficiently and effectively to enhance their productivity.

5. It demonstrated that some of them are successfully balancing their time while

engaging in social media usage with task completion is achievable through

effective time management, prioritization, and self-discipline. Some of the l

participants highlighted the importance of setting clear boundaries, such as

dedicating specific time blocks for both social media and work related tasks.

6. Key insights of social media can be motivational videos, or pictures. information

access, time boundaries. It aimed to understand how social media affects our

mind when it comes to reviewing or doing some school work, as the researchers

explore that some of the participants are relying on social media and struggle

with its potential distraction while some of them take breaks to stay motivated.

Recommendations

Based on our interviews with the senior high school students at SJIT, the

researchers recommend that students must set clear boundaries for their social media

use. Limiting screen time, especially during study hours, can help reduce distractions

and procrastination. Students could also explore using social media as a tool for

motivation and organization, such as using apps to plan tasks or finding educational

content.
Teachers

Based on the researcher interviews with senior high school students at SJIT, the

researchers recommend that teachers encourage students to set clear boundaries for

their social media use

Teachers can guide students in managing their screen time, especially during study

periods, to help minimize distractions.

Parents

Parents should encourage their children to set clear boundaries for screen time,

especially during study hours, to help reduce distractions and procrastination. It is also

helpful for parents to have open conversations with their children about how social

media can be used for educational purposes, such as finding useful resources or

staying organized with school tasks.

Students

Students take responsibility for managing their social media use. Students should

set clear boundaries for screen time, especially during study hours, to avoid distractions

and improve focus.
