Part A:

As I work towards my degree, I am pleased to introduce myself as Rodney Ivery in this cohort.
Becoming a member of the American Public University System in 2023 was a major step for me.
Outside of class, I teach people how to hold a gun, gun safety and shooting techniques, I love
spreading the knowledge of safe and responsible firearms usage. Speaking of profession, I
would like to buy a shooting range, where I can teach.

Just the fact that I will be the first of my six brothers to earn a degree creates a drive for me to
succeed. It speaks to the human need for development and that helps me know how to develop
as a person and help others, be it teaching or mentoring.

Even though I do not serve, the discipline and morals learned in the military inspire me. Excited
to study with you in this 8-week session and to be learning new things as well from you.

Part B:

I definitely agree with Erik Erikson Psychosocial Theory of Development. I appreciate Erikson's
emphasis on social and emotional issues throughout the life span, and especially his
perspective that development continues into adulthood.

For example, the stages of Erikson—"Identity vs. Role Confusion" and "Generativity vs.
Stagnation"—speak to me, as someone who fought his background (personal and familial
difficulties) to obtain a degree and carve out a fulfilling career! Generativity stage, in which i
have something that want to offer to the next generation, as my current life stage. My point is
to teach sound use of firearms.

According to Lifespan Development: A Psychological Perspective, Erikson's theory "stresses the

social nature of our development, as opposed to, say, our sexual nature (although, during
certain stages, that may also be of great importance) and [because] the society or culture in
which we live plays a critical role in our development" (Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). A
teaching philosophy that promotes safety, discipline and education to create more united
communities.
