CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Rationale
Social media is an online service of platforms that focuses on making it easier
for users to join social networks and share interests, activities, and information about
in-person contacts. It is also becoming a private and public online yearbook. As seen
by the exponential rise in the usage of computers, iPods, and other gadgets, students
are using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube,
gaming sites, and other blogging sites like never before.
Few people pause to contemplate what the word “social media” really implies
because it has become such a crucial component of our daily communication. Social
networking is still a relatively recent phenomenon, at least for the majority of
individuals. This goes back to the early days of the internet and performs different
purposes than websites. With regard to social media usage, the Philippines is
comparable to the rest of the world. Filipinos, and students in particular, are prone to
using this media, but excessive use may have negative effects. This includes the
student’s ability to complete academic home tasks because social media acts as a
barrier to them.
Younger generation are very lucky to live with innovative technologies and
bright inventions of people. In this modern world, one of the popular inventions that is
used worldwide is social media. Social media is the most recent form of media and
having many features and characteristics (Hoih,2017). It is used to communicate
people share their lifestyle, update trends and news, and connect to the world, etc.
Because of the easy access of social media to devices such as smart phones, tablets,
laptops, and etc. which are connected to the internet, the use of social media among
the youth of today is growing by the day and gaining more and more popularity
among students (Celestine & Nonyelum,2018).
According to (Rideout et al.,2016), young people are active social media
users. The mostly used social media platforms, or site are Facebook, What’s App.
Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Skype and etc. In students, Facebook is very popular
and it has a huge population of users all around the world. According to Grossman
(2012), if Facebook were a country it would be the third largest country after China
and India and twice as big as the United States of America. So, it only means that
social media is one of the most common activities among children, adolescents and
emerging adults now a days (Mowafy,2018).
In students, social media is very helpful for it is used for educational purposes,
for communication, entertainment and etc. But sometimes social media can be a
distraction to students. According to Oye (2019), almost 25% of students time on the
interest is spent in social networking sites (Jacobsen & Fortse , 2018). This spent on
social media sites might affect the Academic Performance of students. In the study of
San Miguel (2015) which focused on the relationship between time spent on
Facebook and the academic performance of students, he indicated that more the social
media increased, the academic performance decreased. So, it’s shows that social
media has a negative effect on academic performance. However, in the other study
like Ahmed and Qazi (2014), Hangitton and Hsich (2016). Pasek and Hargittai
(2013), which they conducted the same topic revealed no correlation between social
media and students’ academic performance. (Owusu-Acheaw and Larson, 2015) with
their different respondents, their findings says that there is no relationship between the
social media usage and the academic performance on grades of students.
The primary goal of this study is to determine the level of social media usage
of Senior high school students with the relation to their academic performance.
Moreover, this study will provide beneficial notions to the aforementioned students
and as well as for the future generation.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the Senior High School Students’ Level of
Social Media usage with its relation to their academic performance.
More specifically, this tries to answer the following:
1. What is the total percentage of students who use social media
during class hours?
2. What is the level of social media usage of the students?
3. What is the total mean time spent in using social media during
class hours of SHS students?
4. What is the mean academic performance of Senior High School
Students?
5. Is there a significant relationship between mean time spent in
using social media during class hours and the mean academic performance of
Senior High School Students?
6. Is there any difference between or among the level of
social.media usage with relation to the academic performance of the students?
Scope and Delimitation
This study would only revolves around the level of social media usage
and its relation to academic performance of Senior High School Students.. This
study will also include the response of the respondents regarding to their
excessive usage as if it is not indicated to affect their academic performances.
The alternative respondents of this study are the Senior High School Students in
Sogod National High School under the academic track in the school year of 2022-
2023. Specific app that they were going to utilize and navigate online are not
anymore engage in this study at all. Moreover, this study will utilize research-
made and adapted questionnaires to gather those illicit data..
Significance of the Study
This study entitled “ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF
SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE IN RELATION TO THEIR ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE” will be beneficial to the following:
This study will be able to help the teachers in knowing the relationship of
social media usage and academic performance of SHS students. This will also guide
the teachers in making necessary actions to minimize poor academic performance of
the student.
This study will merit to help students in minimizing the social media usage
and give them insights on how to be a responsible social media user.
This study will be a great help to the parents by having awareness and will
serve as an eye opener for them to keep on track with their child’s academic
performance in school along with the utilization of social media usage.
This study will give an in-depth understanding about the relationship between
social media usage and academic performance of senior high school students. This
will also provide useful ideas for the future researchers which can give possible
solutions that will address the current situation.
