Module 5: Abuse and Neglect – Assignment

1. Describe all the feelings that you (or other PSWs) might have in this situation.
Explain how they might be helpful or unhelpful in resolving the problem. (2
marks)
I would feel really upset and confused in this situation. I’d feel sad for Mrs. Green because
she seems scared and helpless. Also I might feel angry at the daughter for talking to her like
that. These feelings might help me to realize something is wrong and to speak up for Mrs.
Green. But if I get too emotional or angry, I might say something wrong or not act
professional, which can make things worse.

2. List three behaviours of Mrs. Green’s that indicate she may be abused. (3
marks)
a. She always looks worried about the time, like she’s scared to go over the time I’m with
her.

b. She didn’t want me to clean up the water even though it was needed – she was trying to
rush me out.

c. She looked down and stayed quiet when her daughter was yelling at her – she didn’t
speak up at all.

3. In this situation, describe how power is being exerted over another person.
(2 marks)
The daughter is using her power by controlling everything – like what Mrs. Green eats, who
she sees, and even telling me to stop coming. She speaks to Mrs. Green in a rude and mean
way, like she’s not letting her make her own choices. Mrs. Green didn’t even argue or say
anything, like she’s scared to.

4. What action is appropriate for the PSW to take in this situation? Why? (3
marks)
As a PSW student, I would tell my supervisor right away and write down everything I saw
and heard. This is because Mrs. Green might be in a unsafe situation and I have to make sure
she gets help. Even if I’m not sure if it’s abuse, it’s better to report it than ignore it. My job is
to care and protect the client.
