COURSE- STRENGTH OF MATERIALS SEASSON- 2025-2026
ASSIGNMENT- 2 (Each question carries 2 marks) DME/2nd YEAR/ 3rd SEM.
Date of submission: 08/08/2025
1. Explain the difference between Area Moment of Inertia and Mass Moment of Inertia with suitable units.
2. State and explain the Parallel Axis Theorem. Why is it important in engineering design?
3. Using the Perpendicular Axis Theorem, calculate the moment of inertia of a thin circular disc of radius 80 mm
about an axis perpendicular to its plane and passing through the center.
4. A solid circular shaft has a diameter of 50 mm. Compute its polar moment of inertia.
5. Define Radius of Gyration. How is it related to moment of inertia and mass/area?
6. Find the moment of inertia of a rectangular section 200 mm wide and 300 mm high about its base and also
about the centroidal horizontal axis.
7. Determine the moment of inertia of a hollow circular section with
Outer diameter = 100 mm
Inner diameter = 60 mm
about its centroidal axis.
8. Why is the centroidal axis used for moment of inertia calculations in standard structural sections (like I-section,
T-section)?
9. Calculate the centroidal moment of inertia about the horizontal axis for a T-section having:
Flange: 100 mm × 20 mm
Web: 20 mm × 100 mm
10. Find the polar moment of inertia of a hollow circular shaft with
External diameter = 120 mm
Internal diameter = 80 mm.
