Trees

Joyce Kilmer's poem 'Trees' emphasizes the beauty and significance of nature, particularly trees, which he believes surpasses human creations. Through vivid metaphors, he personifies trees, attributing them with human-like qualities to illustrate their connection to the Divine. Ultimately, Kilmer suggests that while he can write poetry, nothing can match the artistry of God's creation found in nature.

“TREES”

By: Joyce Kilmer

Reflection
The main idea of the poem is that the natural world personified by the tree. The
true nature and beauty of a tree is overwhelming than any human creation. Joyce
Kilmer states this in the phrase, “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree”,
which he is signifying his belief. Joyce Kilmer used vivid metaphors to personify the
tree. Granting it like human characteristics. The “hungry mouth” relates to the roots
obtaining nutrients from the ground while the “leafy arms” are said to be raised in
prayer. The presence of tree in the poem connects to the Divine creator. The tree’s
upward growth and ability to shelter life show God’s perfect creation artistry. While
Kilmer acknowledges his ability to write poems, but no man can replicate the true
beauty, nature and perfect artistry of God’s creation.
