historical monument in your city.
Question 3
Read the following passage and answer the questions (a) and (b) that follow :
The cat family can be divided into ‘big cats’ and ‘small cats’, but size is not their only difference. The big
cats, such as the lion, tiger and jaguar –roar, while the small cats, such as the puma and cheetah-purr.
The big cats lie down to feed, whereas, the small cats crouch while eating their prey. The small cats,
rest with their paws tucked under them and their tail wrapped around their bodies, while the big cats
rest with their paws and tail stretched out straight.
Cats have fascinated humans for thousands of years, being domesticated about ten thousand years ago
when wandering tribes first settled into village life. In Egypt about three thousand to four thousand
years ago, all cats were worshipped as sacred animals, but it was lions that were particularly revered.
The most important event in the Egyptian calendar was the annual flooding of the River Nile, bringing
as it did the rich, fertile silt. This silt was important for growing the good crops in ancient Egypt, and the
lion was believed to control these floods. In many other early civilisations the lion was also linked with
the sun. Its golden mane represented the sun’s rays and it was a symbol of invincible power and
kingship.
Lions have also been used to symbolize bravery in battle, masculinity and watchfulness, as well as
courage and generosity. Unfortunately for the lions, however, the Assyrian monarchs or kings believed
that they could only achieve true kingship by killing a lion - the king of the beasts. They believed this
would give them the strength and bravery of the lion.
In the 3rd century BC, the Indian Emperor Ashoka, an early conservationist, erected many pillars
inscribed with Buddhist teachings on nature and non-violence. The lion, sacred to the Buddhists,
topped many of these columns or pillars.
There are now not many Asian lions left, either in India or elsewhere. A small population of about three
hundred in the north-west of the country is the only surviving group in the wild. Although very similar
to their African relative, Asian lions have a long fringe under their belly.
Like most cats, lions’ sight has evolved to enable twilight hunting, being especially well equipped to
detect slight movements in semi-darkness. They are also extremely sensitive to sound, being able to
hear frequencies much higher than the human ear can detect. None of the cats have a particular well-
developed sense of smell.
Lions, being the supreme animal hunters, and having an aloofness and apparent self-confidence born
of invincibility, remain today as always - kings, not only of the cat family, but of all the beasts.
