Google Tag Manager Tutorial

1. Introduction
Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool by Google that allows you to manage and deploy
marketing tags (snippets of code or tracking pixels) on your website or mobile app without
modifying the code directly.

Key Benefits:

● Centralized tag management.

● Easy integration with Google Analytics, Ads, and third-party platforms.

● Improved website performance (tags load asynchronously).

● No coding required for adding or updating tags.

2. Setting Up a GTM 4 Account

1. Go to Google Tag Manager.

2. Click Create Account.

3. Enter Account Name (your company or website).

4. Select Country.

5. Create a Container:

○ Name: Your website name.

○ Target Platform: Web / iOS / Android / AMP.

6. Click Create and accept the terms of service.

7. Copy and paste the container code into your website:

○ Head Tag: First snippet.

○ Body Tag: Second snippet.

3. GTM 4 Interface Overview

● Workspace: Main area to create and manage tags, triggers, and variables.

● Tags: Snippets of code that fire on your website.

● Triggers: Conditions for firing tags (page view, click, form submission).

● Variables: Dynamic values used by tags and triggers.

● Versions: Track changes and publish updates.

● Preview: Test your setup before publishing.

4. Creating Your First Tag

1. Go to Tags → New → Tag Configuration.

2. Choose a Tag Type:

○ Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

○ Google Ads Conversion

○ Custom HTML/JS

3. Set Triggering (example: All Pages).

4. Name your tag and click Save.

5. Understanding Triggers
Triggers define when your tags should fire.

Common Triggers:

● Page View: Fires on page load.

● Click: Fires when a user clicks a button or link.

● Form Submission: Fires on form submission.

● Scroll Depth: Fires when user scrolls a percentage of the page.

● Custom Events: Fires on user-defined actions.

Tip: Always test triggers using Preview mode.

6. Using Variables
Variables are dynamic values GTM uses to fire tags.

● Built-in Variables: Page URL, Click Text, Referrer.

● User-defined Variables: Custom JavaScript, cookies, or data layer values.

Example: Track button clicks

1. Create Click Text Variable.

2. Use it in a trigger.

3. Fire the tag.

7. Data Layer
Data Layer is a JavaScript object that stores page and user action info. GTM reads this to fire
tags.

Example:
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
dataLayer.push({
'event': 'purchase',
'transactionId': '12345',
'value': 99.99
});

Use this for purchase tracking, custom events, or dynamic triggers.

8. Preview & Debug

1. Click Preview in the GTM workspace.

2. Enter your website URL.

3. GTM Debug panel shows:

○ Tags fired

○ Tags not fired

○ Variables & data layer events

Tip: Always test before publishing to avoid errors.

9. Publishing

2. Add Version Name and Description.

3. Click Publish to make changes live.

10. Integrating GTM 4 with Google Analytics 4

Events track user actions like clicks, downloads, and video plays.

3. Link the trigger to the tag.

4. Test & publish.
