Candlestick Patterns – Quick Reference Guide
This cheat sheet lists 40 core candlestick patterns used in technical analysis. Patterns are grouped
by the number of candles involved and categorized into Bullish, Bearish, or Neutral signals.
Single-Candle Patterns
Pattern Signal / Description
Doji Neutral – Signals indecision; possible reversal.
Dragonfly Doji Bullish – Appears at bottom, long lower shadow.
Gravestone Doji Bearish – Appears at top, long upper shadow.
Hammer Bullish – Small body, long lower shadow at bottom of trend.
Hanging Man Bearish – Similar to Hammer but after uptrend.
Spinning Top Neutral – Small body, possible trend pause.
Marubozu Bullish/Bearish – No shadows; strong momentum signal.
Inverted Hammer Bullish – Appears at bottom, long upper shadow.
Shooting Star Bearish – Appears at top, long upper shadow.
Two-Candle Patterns
Pattern Signal / Description
Bullish Engulfing Bullish – Large body engulfs prior bearish candle.
Bearish Engulfing Bearish – Large body engulfs prior bullish candle.
Harami Bullish/Bearish – Small candle within prior large body.
Harami Cross Neutral/Reversal – Doji inside prior body.
Tweezer Bottom Bullish – Two candles with same low.
Tweezer Top Bearish – Two candles with same high.
Piercing Line Bullish – Gap down then strong reversal up.
Dark Cloud Cover Bearish – Gap up then closes below midpoint.
Kicker Pattern Strong Bullish/Bearish – Gap and strong follow-through.
Three-Candle Patterns
Pattern Signal / Description
Morning Star Bullish – Long down candle, small body, strong up candle.
Evening Star Bearish – Long up candle, small body, strong down candle.
Three White Soldiers Bullish – Three strong green candles after downtrend.
Three Black Crows Bearish – Three strong red candles after uptrend.
Three Inside Up Bullish – Harami plus confirmation candle up.
Three Inside Down Bearish – Harami plus confirmation candle down.
Abandoned Baby Reversal – Doji separated by gaps.
Continuation Patterns

Rising Three Methods Bullish – Long candle, 3 small opposite candles, breakout.
Falling Three Methods Bearish – Long candle, 3 small opposite candles, breakdown.
Mat Hold Bullish – Similar to Rising Three, but small dips within range.
Separating Lines Continuation – Gap and same direction candle continuation.
