Celebration of International Literacy Day 8 September, 2025
Literacy is fundamental to human life, empowering individuals and societies by providing
economic opportunities, promoting gender equality, and fostering political participation. It
enables people to acquire knowledge, express themselves, and critically understand the world,
which contributes to personal growth, improved health, and the reduction of poverty.
Every year on September 8, the world celebrates International Literacy Day, a global event that
aims to advance literacy as a basic human right and a major factor in sustainable development.
Ullas Week, a lively campaign to involve students in creative and educational activities,
coincided with this year's event, which was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm. The week-
long festivities aimed to develop students' love of learning, improve their literacy, and encourage
creativity.
Keep in mind the importance of literacy our D.El.ED. First and second year students organized
various activities in the premises of our Institute and during the school experience programme in
government schools.
Educational games: The development of educational games by first-year D.El.ED students was
one of the most captivating projects during Ullas Week. Students created creative games that
blended enjoyment and education under the direction of mentors and teachers. These games
made difficult ideas approachable and entertaining by concentrating on topics like science, math,
language, and general knowledge. For instance, students developed card games that assessed
vocabulary and grammar, board games that required players to answer math problems in order to
advance, and quizzes that were integrated into mobile applications. In addition to developing
pupils' creativity, the interactive exercise strengthened their comprehension of academic subjects.
Literacy Activities
Throughout Ullas Week, various literacy-related activities Literacy scavenger hunt in which
pupil teacher asked their students to find out noun, pronoun, adjective and verb from the story
from their English literature book. Another activity named Scrabble activity done by students in
which students put seven letters up on the board and ask their students to make as many words as
they can from the letters. Another pupil teacher conducted chain story activity to engage students
and promote the importance of reading and writing during SEP (School Experience Programme).
Students from D.El.ED. First year wrote a book review of the last book that they read, or a
favourite book from childhood. Students also made bookmarks on the occasion of International
literacy day.
Library Boxes
Another standout initiative during Ullas Week was the creation of library boxes. Students
worked in groups to design and assemble portable libraries, which were then filled with books
donated by teachers, parents, and community members.
The library boxes were decorated with colorful designs and motivational quotes, making them
visually appealing and inviting. Each box contained a curated selection of books, including
fiction, non-fiction, educational texts, and storybooks, catering to readers of all ages and
interests.
Conclusion:
Students, teachers, and the community at large were all greatly impacted by the events planned
for Ullas Week and International Literacy Day. The development of educational games and
library boxes inspired students to use their knowledge practically, collaborate with others, and
think imaginatively. These exercises promoted cooperation, problem-solving abilities, and a
feeling of accomplishment. Students' reading, writing, and language skills were improved by the
literacy-focused exercises, which also increased their self-expression confidence. Ullas Week
and International Literacy Day were huge successes that demonstrated the kids' passion,
inventiveness, and commitment to literacy and education. In addition to improving students'
educational experiences, the activities advanced the more general objective of creating a
sustainable and literate society.
