Missing letter

Show the student the following four words: [colt, tram, belt, toll], challenge them to try and
identify what the words have in common the letter ’t’. Explain that in these questions the same
letter must t into both sets of brackets, to complete the word in front of the brackets and begin
the word after the brackets.

Example: col (?) ram bel (?) oll

Answer: t [colt, tram, belt, toll]
The best way to work these questions out is to choose one of the options that seems most
familiar to the student and get the student to work through di erent letters they think may be
possible and test that they are real words.

For example the student may try ‘op’ and give options to add p/b/h/t:

Whilst these letters work with ‘op’ they are not suitable with other options given so the student
must use trial and error with the other options each time.

P = hop (yes) pop (yes) pap (no) pame (no) = P not possible

And repeat for the other options until nding the suitable letter:

T = hot, top, pat, tame (Correct!)

Reminder: Remind the student that all words require a vowel or letter ‘y’ to be a real word,
encourage them not to worry if the rst word they don’t recognise and to move on to the others to
see if they are easier.

REPORT
Joyce did a good job today! She was attentive and engaged throughout class as always and
despite facing some challenging content was able to apply the techniques we learned to each
given question type. The ISEB test has 21 verbal reasoning question types, she has currently
studied 5, so still has some work to do in order to be fully prepared for this section of the test.
Overall her grasp of vocabulary is solid and as she is dedicated to the session she is able to make
progress quickly.
