Multivariate Data Analysis: Reading Notes

Multivariate data analysis involves simultaneously analyzing multiple measurements from each individual or object. It builds variates, which are linear combinations of variables with empirically determined weights. Variates are calculated as the sum of each variable multiplied by its weight. There are different measurement scales for data, including nonmetric scales like nominal and ordinal, and metric scales like interval and ratio, with ratio having the highest precision.

Multivariate Data Analysis

Reading Notes
Multivariate Definition
• In general it means all statistical methods that simultaneously analyse
multiple measurements on each individual or object under
investigation.
• Building block of Multivariate is the variate- a linear combination of
variables with empirically determined weights.
• Variate value = w1X1 + w2X2 + w3X3 + ……wnXn
Measurement Scale

Nonmetric
Qualitative
Data
Metric
Quantitative
Nonmetric
• Nominal- Classification, Categorization (e.g gender, age)
• Ordinal – Ranking – greater than or less then

• Number in in ordinal are non- quantitative (only to show relative

position)
Metric Measurement Scale
• Interval – arbitrary zero point as in Celsius
• Ratio- absolute zero point
• Both are highest level of measurement precision, permitting
mathematical operations to be performed.
• Ratio has the highest measurement precision.
