Intravenous Fluid Computation

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. KCl ordered is 20 mEq. Since each ml of KCl contains 2 mEq, we need 20/2 = 10 ml of KCl. 2. Total volume is KCl (10 ml) + PNSS (90 cc) = 100 cc 3. Infusion time is 1 hour. So infusion rate is 100 cc/hour. 4. Using a solu-set, drop factor is usually 15 drops/ml. So drop rate is 100 cc/hour x 15 drops/ml / 60 minutes/hour = 25 drops/minute.

INTRAVENOUS FLUID

COMPUTATION
VOLUME/TIME (ml/hour) - IV fluid rate

Refers to a certain amount of liquid

to be infused in a given time period
in hours.
Formula: volume (ml)
time (hr)
Example: Infuse D5LR iL to be
consumed in 8 hours.
VOLUME/TIME (gtt/min) – IV FLOW RATE

Refers to a certain amount of liquid to be infused in a

given time period according to the IV set used whether it
is micro or macroset.
FORMULA:
Flow rate (gtt/min)= VOLUME (mL) X DROP FACTOR
TIME in hour X 60 minutes/hr
VOLUME/TIME – IV FLOW RATE

Example: Doctor X ordered PNSS iL x 12 hours. Using a macroset, how

many drops per minute is needed to be infused to the patient?
Formula = Volume in mL X drop factor
Time in mins.
= 1000 ml X 20gtt/ml
12 x 60
= 20000 gtt
720 mins
= 27.78 or 28 gtt/min
VOLUME/TIME – IV FLOW RATE

Example #2: Dr. SRP ordered D5IMB 500cc to run at

60cc per hour. Using a microset, how many drops/
minute would be the IV flow rate? How many hours will
it be consumed?
TEST QUESTION:

The physician ordered KCl 20 mEq + 90cc PNSS to run for 1 hour via
solu-set. The stock preparation of KCl is 2 mEq/ml in a 20 ml vial.
Question: 1. How many cc of KCl will be added to PNSS?
2. How many cc/hour is the infusion?
3. What is the drop rate of the fluid?
