What are input devices?

An input device is any peripheral that facilitate


the entry of data and instructions into a
computer.

There are two general categories


of input devices:
i. Manual Input Devices
ii. Direct Data Entry Devices
MANUAL INPUT DEVICES
Manual Input Devices: data is
entered or transferred into the
computer by a user.
Some examples: keyboard, mouse,
touch screen, joystick, touch pad, light
pen, biometric systems, scanner,
microphone, digitizer (webcams,
camera)…
DIRECT DATA ENTRY (DDE) DEVICES

Direct Data Entry (DDE) Devices: device that


can transfer information automatically from a
document such as a form or barcode into the
computer. Such devices are used when large
volumes of data need to be stored quickly.

Some examples: barcode reader, smart card,


optical mark recognition (OMR), optical
character recognition (OCR), magnetic ink
character reader (MICR), sensors(MIDI)…
