MODULE 1:
COMMUNITY BASED MANAGEMENT OF
ACUTE MALNUTRITION
AN OVERVIEW OF MALNUTRITION
Introduction to the module
This module has three sessions:
• Session 1: Overview of Malnutrition
• Session 2: Magnitude of Malnutrition in
Bangladesh as well as Rohingya context
• Session: 3 Consequence of malnutrition
2
Defining Malnutrition
Malnutrition:
is a condition that develops when the body does
not get the right amount of the nutrients it needs
to maintain healthy tissues and organ function.
Encompasses syndromes of over and under-
nutrition
Over nutrition:
Is a condition arising from over consumption of
certain foods/nutrients than the body requires
over a period of time

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRITION (CMAM)
Defining Malnutrition
Under-nutrition:
• Is a consequence of a deficiency in nutrient intake
and/or absorption in the body.
• The different forms of under-nutrition that can appear
isolated or in combination are chronic malnutrition,
underweight, acute malnutrition and micronutrient
deficiencies.
• These forms can be moderate or severe.
• In the context of this training guidelines, the term
malnutrition relates exclusively to under-nutrition
COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRITION (CMAM) 4
Defining Malnutrition
• Stunting or chronic malnutrition: is defined by a height/length-
for-age (H/LFA) below -2z-score.
• It is a result of prolonged or repeated episodes of under-nutrition
starting in early childhood
• Other contributors to stunting include
• Chronic or recurrent infections
• Intestinal parasite infestations
• Low birth weight resulting from maternal factors e.g.
poor nutrition before and during pregnancy and
lactation, short stature and infection

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRITION (CMAM)
Defining Malnutrition
• Acute Malnutrition or wasting: is defined by
• Low Mid-Upper Arm Circumference [MUAC] (<12.5cm in children 6-
59M)
• Low Weight-for-Height/Length [WFH/L]) (<-2zscores in children 6-
59M)
• The presence of bilateral pitting oedema.
• It is caused by a decrease in food consumption and/or illness
resulting in sudden weight loss and /or bilateral pitting oedema .

Magnitude of Malnutrition
• From your experiences in nutrition service delivery,
can any of you share information on the
magnitude of malnutrition among Rohingya
communities?

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRITION (CMAM) 11
Group Discussion:
Why is it important to treat acute malnutrition?
Short term consequences
Child hood mortality:Over 50% of childhood deaths are directly or indirectly
related to malnutrition
Children with severe
acute malnutrition
are NINE times
more likely to die
than their healthy
peers
Short term consequences
• Maternal mortality
• Adverse birth outcomes
• Small for Gestational Age (SGA)
• Intra-Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR)
COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE MALNUTRITION (CMAM) 14
Long term consequences
The intergenerational cycle of
undernutrition
