Active Filters PPT v7

This document discusses using active filters as a solution for power quality problems. It describes three common power quality issues: low power factor that can result in utility penalties, harmonic distortion from non-linear loads, and Ferranti effect under low load conditions on long transmission lines. The document then introduces active filters called QualPower solutions that can correct all three issues by maintaining power factors above 0.99, compensating for harmonics, and addressing Ferranti effect. Case studies show improvements in power factor, energy consumption, harmonic distortion, and power consumption when using active filters compared to traditional fixed capacitor solutions.

ACTIVE FILTERS

A SOLUTION FOR
POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS
POWER QUALITY PROBLEM: 1
Example: RUPA & CO. LTD.
MAY 2017 JULY 2017
LOW POWER FACTOR
• A Power Factor below 0.99 attracts
penalty by Power Utility

• Normal Power Factor of Industrial

loads such as Motors, Drives,
Solenoids etc. is around 0.8.

• For Power Factor below 0.85,

penalty in West Bengal is around
16% of the Energy Cost

NET BENEFIT : Rs. 3,84,669.26 PER MONTH

POWER QUALITY PROBLEM: 2

HARMONIC DISTORTION OF CURRENT

BECAUSE OF NON-LINEAR LOAD

• Power Control by use of Thyristors, IGBT’s or other Power

Switching devices inevitably produce distortion of Current

• Such distortion causes Harmonics, thereby heating

transformers and causing power loss

• Also causes mal-function of electronic gadgets and early

failures of computers, electronic controls etc.
POWER QUALITY PROBLEM: 3

FERRANTI EFFECT

• Ferranti effect is a problem of under-loaded power

transmission line.

• If the installation is at the end of a long transmission line

and the load is very low during holidays, the voltage may
go much above rated voltage because of Ferranti Effect
thereby causing damage to connected equipments.
The only way to correct Ferranti effect is
