Distinguish Rational functions,
Rational equations, and
Rational Inequalities
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Identify an expression whether a rational or not
2. Distinguish rational functions, rational equations, and
rational inequalities
A rational expression is an expression that can be
written as a ratio of two polynomials.
Note: A polynomial is a constant or a constant multiplied by
variable(s) raised to the positive integer.
Example:
Polynomial since it is a constant Not polynomial since it has radical sign
Polynomial since the degree Not polynomial sine the degree
of x is positive
of x is negative
Note : A rational expression is an expression that can be written as a ratio of two
polynomials.
Example:
It is a rational expression because both
numerator and denominator are
polynomials
It is a rational expression because both
numerator and denominator are polynomials.
It is not a rational expression because
the numerator is in the degree of the
fraction which is not a positive integer.
It is not a rational expression because x in
the numerator has the negative
exponent
Observe and find their similarities and differences
Rational Equation Rational Inequality Rational Function
Rational Equation
A rational equation is equation involving rational expressions.
Things to consider:
• It involves rational expression/s
• only one variable x
• have an equal sign (=).
Example:
are a rational expression
With one variable, x
With equal sign
are rational expression
With one variable, x
With equal sign
is a rational expression
With one variable, x
With equal sign
and are rational expression
With one variable, x
With equal sign
Rational Inequality
A rational inequality is an inequality involving rational expressions.
Things to consider:
• It involves rational expression/s
• only one variable x
• has one of the inequality symbols (<,>,≤,≥).
Example:
are rational expression
With one variable, x
With less than or equal to sign
are rational expression
With one variable, x
With greater than sign
is a rational expression
With one variable, x
With greater than or equal to (≥) sign
2𝑥 2𝑥
≥1 is a rational expression
𝑥 +1 𝑥 +1
With one variable, x
With greater than or equal to (≥) sign
Rational Function
A rational function is a function of the form where and are polynomials and
is not equal to zero.
Things to consider:
• It involves rational expression/s
• Two variables x and y or
• Have an equal sign (=).
Example:
is a rational expression
With two variables, x, and f(x) or y
With equal sign
are a rational expression
With two variables, x, and f(x) or y
With equal sign
is a rational expression
With two variables, x, and f(x) or y
With equal sign
is a rational expression
With two variables, x, and f(x) or y
With equal sign
To easily find the similarities and differences between the three, See this table:
