Review
Exogenic processes – happens outside the Earth’s surface
o Erosion
o Weathering
o Mass wasting
o Sedimentation
ENDOGENIC PROCESSES – happens inside the Earth’s body.
Comprises
o Volcanic processes – processes relating to volcanic landforms
o Tectonic processes – relating to the movement of plates
o Isostatic processes – relating to the gravitational equilibrium of crust floating on the mantle
2 Types of Endogenic Processes
1. Folding
2. Faulting
Folding
Faults
Folds
If a fold is going down, it’s a SYNCLINE
If a fold is sloping up, it’s an ANTICLINE
The hinge axis may be titled, in which case, the fold is tilted.
The hinge axis may plunge, in which case, the fold is plunging.
In SYNCLINES, the younger rocks are in the center, and the older rocks on the surface.
In ANTICLINES, the older rocks are in the center, and the younger rocks on the surface.
BASINS and DOMES are formed when pressure is focused on a single spot.
BASINS are like synclines in the form of concentric circles; no hinge axis.
DOMES are like anticlines in the form of concentric circles; no hinge axis.
