BIOS and CMOS: Key Functions Explained

The document discusses BIOS and CMOS. BIOS is firmware that initializes hardware during boot up and searches for boot devices. It performs a power-on self-test (POST). Beep codes provide error messages. BIOS is stored on a non-volatile chip on the motherboard. CMOS is a chip that stores BIOS settings using power from a battery. If the CMOS battery is removed, BIOS defaults are restored and custom settings are erased.

BIOS – Basic Input Output System.

Firmware that is built into

computer's motherboard.

• Initializes the computer's

hardware as the computer is
being booted.

• It then searches for a
boot device(optical or

Beeps Codes.

The beeping sequence is a coded message (beep

code) designed to tell the user what is wrong with the
computer. There is no official standard for beep codes; audio
patterns vary according to the manufacturer of the computer's
BIOS program.
BIOS
•The BIOS is stored on
the BIOS chip on the
motherboard.
•The BIOS chip is non-
volatile.
There are certain settins
computer does need to
maintain after the
computer is turned off. Date and time.

CMOS
CMOS - Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor

The CMOS is a physical part of the motherboard: it is a memory chip that
houses setting configurations and is powered by the onboard battery.

The BIOS settings are stored on the motherboard in the CMOS chip.

• The CMOS chip is volatile.

CMOS
• The CMOS chip needs constant power to maintain
its conents or settings.

• The CMOS battery maintains this settings;

• If the CMOS battery is removed, the BIOS

will reset back to its default settings.

• Erase any custom settings that we have configured.
