AUTHOR
Patricia Uberoi is an Emeritus Fellow at the Institute of
Chinese Studies (ICS), Delhi. She served as the
Chairperson of the Institute of Chinese Studies from 2015-
2021.
• Her research interests centre on aspects of family,
kinship, gender, popular culture and social policy in respect
to both India and China.
•At the ICS, she has been closely associated for several
years with the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM)
Forum for Regional Cooperation, a Track II dialogue
focusing on development issues in the region stretching
from Northeast India to Southwest China.

The Resignation

• There are three conditionalities


• The first is that the partner should be of
appropriately matched class status, with the
man, if possible in a position of relative
authority or seniority
• The second conditionality is parental approval of the
relationship
• The final conditionality is no pre-marital sex

• Sometimes what seems to be wrong isn't wrong

CONCLUSION
• In this story of romantic courtship which was in the women's
Era she talks about multiple and complex trajectories
• We see that one engagement does not have the sacramental
status of a marriage.
• Thus once the marriage has taken place the problem is to
clear misunderstandings and ensuring couple
accommodations with each other
• It is different in the case of engaged couples to decide on
whether and what conditions should the marriage ahead as
planned
