Operations of Functions
Let f and g be functions:
(a) Their sum, denoted by f + g, is the function defined
by (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x).
(b) Their difference, denoted by f – g, is the function
defined by (f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x).
(c) Their product, denoted by f * g, is the function defined
by (f * g)(x) = f(x) * g(x).
(d) Their quotient, denoted by f / g, is the function
defined by (f / g)(x) = f(x) / g(x), excluding the values
of x where g(x) = 0.

Lets try!
f(x) = x + 3 g(x) = x2 + 2x – 8
p(x) = 2x – 7 h(x) =
v(x) = x2 + 5x + 4 t(x) =
Determine the following functions.
(a) (v + g)(x) (c) (f + h)(x) (e) (v/g)(x)
(b) (f*p)(x) (d) (p – f)(x)
Lets try!
Solution:
(a) (v + g)(x) = (x2 + 5x + 4) + (x2 + 2x – 8)
= 2x2 + 7x – 4
(b) (f*p)(x) = (x + 3) + (2x – 7)
= 2x2 – x - 21
Lets try!
Solution:
(c) (f + h)(x) = (x + 3) +
= = * =
Lets try!
Solution:
(d) (p – f)(x) = (2x – 7) – (x + 3)
= 2x – 7 – x – 3
= x – 10
Lets try!
Solution:
(e) (v/g)(x) = (x2 + 5x + 4) / (x2 + 2x – 8)
= (x2 + 5x + 4) / (x2 + 2x – 8)

Application:
Express the function f1(x) = x2 + 3 as sum or
difference of the functions.
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 r(x)=
Solution:
q(x) + f(x) = (x2 – 2x + 2) + (2x + 1)
= x2 – 2x + 2 + 2x + 1
= x2 + 3
= f1(x) Thus f1(x) = q(x) + f(x)
Application:
Express the function f2(x) = x2 – 4x + 1 as
sum or difference of the functions.
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 r(x)=
Solution:
q(x) – f(x) = (x2 – 2x + 2) – (2x + 1)
= x2 – 2x + 2 – 2x – 1
= x2 – 4x + 1
= f2(x) Thus f2(x) = q(x) – f(x)
SEATWORK:
Express the function g1(x) = 2x3 – 3x2 + 2x + 2
as a product or quotient of the functions.
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 r(x)=
Solution:
f(x)* q(x) = (2x + 1)(x2 – 2x + 2)
= (2x)(x2 – 2x + 2) + (x2 – 2x + 2)
= (2x3 – 4x2 + 4x) + (x2 – 2x + 2)
= 2x3 – 3x2 + 2x + 2
= f2(x) Thus g1(x) = f(x)* q(x)
SEATWORK:
Express the function g2(x) = x – 1 as a product
or quotient of the functions.
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 r(x)=
Solution:
f(x) / r(x) = (2x + 1) ÷
= (2x + 1)*
=x-1
= g2(x) Thus g3(x) = r(x) / f(x)
SEATWORK:
Express the function g3(x) = as a product or
quotient of the functions.
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2 r(x)=
Solution:
r(x) / f(x) = ÷ (2x + 1)
= *
= g3(x) Thus g3(x) = r(x) / f(x)
