Nexus
Web development
Internship Position
• The internship I completed at Nexus was an intensive 8-week program in the web
development vertical.
• My primary task during this period was to design and develop an e-commerce website
aimed at small business owners.
• This website was to feature personalized merchandise options and provide real-time
communication capabilities between customers and business owners.
• The project’s successful completion allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge in a
practical setting, gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, and
contribute meaningfully to Nexus's ongoing mission.

Objective

1. Project Goals
• The main objective of the project was to develop a fully functional e-commerce platform
that met the specific needs of small business owners. The goals included:
 Personalization: Allowing customers to customize their merchandise, which included
options to select colours, add text, and upload images.
 Real-Time Communication: Enabling real-time chats between customers and business
owners to discuss orders, provide support, and answer queries.
 User-Friendly Interface: Designing an intuitive and responsive user interface that could
be easily navigated by users of all technical skill levels.
 Security: Ensuring that the platform was secure, protecting user data and financial
transactions.
 Scalability: Building the platform in a way that it could scale to accommodate an
increasing number of users and transactions.

Project Overview
• 1.Website Features
• Personalized Merchandise Design:
The website featured a robust product customization tool that allowed customers to
personalize their merchandise. Users could choose from a range of products, such as t-
shirts, mugs, and phone cases, and customize them by selecting colors, adding text, and
uploading images. This feature was designed to be intuitive, allowing users to see a live
preview of their customized product before placing an order.
• Real-Time Conversations:
One of the standout features of the website was the real-time chat functionality. This
feature allowed customers to communicate directly with small business owners, enabling
them to ask questions, request customizations, and receive immediate support. The chat
was integrated seamlessly into the website, accessible from the product pages and the
user’s account dashboard.

5
• User Account Management:
The platform allowed users to create accounts, where they could save their designs, track
their orders, and manage their profiles. This feature was essential for enhancing user
experience, providing a personalized and convenient way for customers to interact with the
website.
• Product Catalog:
The website featured a comprehensive product catalog, which included various categories,
pricing, and detailed descriptions. Customers could easily browse the catalog, filter products
based on their preferences, and view high-quality images of each item.
• Secure Payment Gateway:
The platform integrated a secure payment gateway to ensure safe and reliable transactions.
This feature was crucial for building customer trust, as it protected their financial
information and provided a seamless checkout experience.

Challenges

• Balancing Speed and Quality:

In this internship role, I was asked to work under tight deadlines. This often
required balancing speed with code quality, testing, and debugging.
• Understanding Legacy Code:
I had to work with existing codebases that were difficult to understand or
were poorly documented. Understanding someone else's code or even
getting it to work with new features can be frustrating and time-consuming.
• Debugging and Problem-Solving:
Debugging is a significant part of development. Solving bugs, especially
elusive ones, can take time and patience, making it one of the more
challenging aspects of development.

9
• Team Collaboration and Communication:
Collaboration with team members, especially remotely,
presented challenges. Clear communication was essential for
getting the work done fast.

10
Learnings

• Hands-On Coding Experience:

This internship gave me the chance to apply what I learnt in class to real-
world projects. I worked on tasks that ranged from minor updates to actual
feature development, which helped solidify my understanding of web
technologies.
• Exposure to Development Tools:
Beyond just coding, I learnt to work with version control systems like Git,
task tracking tools like Jira or Trello, and integrated development
environments (IDEs) or code editors that professionals use in the industry .
• Client Interaction:
I also interacted with clients, which helped develop soft skills such as
presenting technical ideas to non-technical people, understanding
requirements, and working with client feedback.
