Modem (MODulator-DEModulator)
• Modem is used to transform the digital signals
to analog signals (Modulation) and to convert
the analog signals received over the telephone
line to digital signals (De-Modulation)
Modem Types
• Internal Modem – Attatched to the internal slot
of the motherboard.speed 56Kbps
• External Modem – connects to the
communication port of the CPU
• Wirelsess modem – Transmits data signals
through the air
• Cable Modem - uses a coaxial cable television
lines to provide a greater bandwidth than the
dial-up computer modem
• DSL Modem – used to get a high speed
broadband service, it can give speeds up to
512Kbps downstream and 256Kbps upstream

Network Interface Card (NIC)
• It is used to connect a computer to a network
• NIC prepare data, send data & control data
• Most NICs are designed for a particular type of
network, protocol, and media
• A MAC Address is attached with every NIC
• MAC - Media Access Control address, a hardware address
that uniquely identifies each node of a network
ADSL
• Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
• It enables faster data transmission over
copper telephone lines
• The "asymmetric" in ADSL refers to the fact
that the downstream data rate is travelling
faster than upstream data.
• ADSL service requires an Internet service
provider (ISP), and ADSL modem
Wireless Technologies
Bluetooth
• it is a high-speed, low-power microwave
wireless wireless technology standard for
exchanging data over short distances (1-
100m) from fixed and mobile devices
• Bluetooth devices – mobile phones,
mouse,keyboard
• Bluetooth can connect up to 8 devices
simultaneously
WAP
• Wireless Application Protocol
• WAP is an international Internet standard
developed for mobile devices
WiFi
• wireless networking technology that uses radio
waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet
and network connections
• It is the underlying technology of wireless local
area networks (WLAN)
• A person with a Wi-Fi device can connect to
the Internet when in proximity of an access
point.
• The region covered by one or several access
points is called a hotspot.
WiMax
• Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access
• It is a wireless, high speed broadband
coverage with broad coverage
