Solve my puzzle…
How is Earth like an
onion?
Title: What is inside our planet?
Learning Objective:
To describe the structure of the earth.
What is inside our Earth?
In the chat, write down
what you already know
about the structure of the
Earth.

Task 1:
Watch this video and write notes on paper / in your book.
Listen carefully. We will watch this twice. You will need
this information to help you in this lesson!
What is inside the Earth?
There are 4 layers below the surface of the
Earth.
The centre is called the inner core. It is solid
and made from iron and nickel. It is the hottest
part.
Around the inner core is the outer core, this is
a liquid and is made from iron and nickel. It is
also very hot!
The Mantle is the thickest layer, it is made of
semi-molten rock and it is the part that the
tectonic plates float on.
The crust is the part that we live on. It is solid
and made from broken slabs called tectonic
plates.. It is also the thinnest part.
Task 2: Draw a labelled diagram of the
structure of the Earth.
Task 3: Match the layer with the description
Go to the assignment and answer the first 4 questions
The hottest part. This layer is solid and is
Crust made of iron and nickel. Temperatures here go
up to 5500°C.
Mantle
This is a liquid layer and it is made of iron and
nickel. It is extremely hot.
The dense, mostly solid layer of the Earth
Outer Core between the outer core and the crust. The
plates float on top of this.
The outer layer of the Earth’s surface, it is
Inner Core relatively thin. It is split into plates of different
sizes.
How do the tectonic plates move?
A convection current is a movement within the
Earth’s mantle caused by the heat of the core.
Heat rises and falls inside the mantle creating the
convection currents generated by radioactive decay
in the core.
These convection currents are one theory as to how
the Earth’s tectonic plates move.

Task 4: Draw the diagram into your
books /onto paper and add a
description of what a convection
current is.
True or False?
Complete questions 5-10 on your assignment. Decide
whether each statement is true or false.
Read each statement carefully!
True or False?
1. False
The centre of the Earth is called the mantle.
2. True
The outer layer of the Earth is called the crust.
3. True
The mantle takes up 80% of the Earth’s inner volume.
4. The core is mostly made of metals.True
5. Parts of the mantle have a temperature of up to 3000
degrees.True
6. Temperatures decrease as you move towards the
Earth’s crust.
False
Research work
Write a story (with pictures) about a journey
to the centre of the earth.
You will start your journey on the crust and
you must describe how you would travel
through the different layers and you should
use the details you have learnt today to help
describe them
