[ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE]
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
• A sequence is a set of numbers.
• An arithmetic sequence is a set of numbers
where the difference between two successive
terms is constant.
• The difference between the two successive terms
is known as the common.
• Difference denoted d.
FINDING COMMON DIFFERENCE
• COMMON DIFFERENCE (d)
d=
EXAMPLE
• FIND THE COMMON DIFFERENCE IN THESE
SET OF NUMBERS.
4, 11, 18, 25
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE FORMULA
(n-1)d
EXAMPLE 1
• Using the arithmetic sequence formula, find
the 11th term in the sequence
5, 11, 17, 23, 29
EXAMPLE 2
Find the first term in the
arithmetic sequence where the
35th term is 687 and the
common difference 14.
ARITHMETIC MEAN
• Arithmetic mean is often referred to as the mean or arithmetic average. It is
calculated by adding all the numbers in a given data set and then dividing it
by the total number of items within that set.

EXAMPLE 1
Find an arithmetic mean
between
5 & 19
EXAMPLE 2
Insert four arithmetic
means between 3 & 12
ARITHMETIC SERIES
Arithmetic series is the sum of a
sequence in which each term is
computed from the previous one by
adding (or subtracting ) a constant.
FORMULAS
EXAMPLE 1
Find the sum of the first 40
terms of the arithmetic series
2, 5, 8, 11, …
EXAMPLE 2
Find the sum of the first 5 terms
of the arithmetic series where
the first term is and the
common difference d= 4.
