Several features require users to have a OneDrive account.
Copilot in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint: first available in the web versions at https://microsoft365.com and later expand to desktop
For Outlook: Users need to be using the new Outlook for Windows (which is publicly called “the new Outlook for Windows” and
it is currently in Preview. Users can load the new Outlook by toggling or Outlook Mobile.
Getting started with the new Outlook for Windows – Microsoft Support.
For Teams: Users need to be using Teams desktop client or the web app. Both current and the new versions of Teams supported.
For Loop: Tenants must have Loop enabled. Learn more how to enable Loop. (only required if customer want to use Copilot in Loop)
The richness of the cross-app experience will depend on the data sources indexed by Microsoft 365. Tenants with the richest data
in Microsoft 365 (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) will get the best results.
Some Copilot experiences require a websocket connection from the device where the Microsoft 365 app is running to a Microsoft service.
#18 Another element of foundational productivity is Semantic Index for Copilot – a critical part of our Copilot System – which we will be rolling to our Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 customers worldwide later this calendar year. With Semantic Index for Copilot, we use a set of AI tools to understand the relationships between different words and phrases specific to your organization. The resulting index on top of your Microsoft Graph allows Copilot to search through billions of vectors and return the most related results in tens of milliseconds.
Semantic Index for Copilot will be able to understand the intent behind your prompts and commands, producing more relevant, transparent results.
Let’s walk through an example of the differences between a standard search from Microsoft 365 and what is available with the Semantic Index for Copilot and Copilot for Microsoft 365. In this scenario, the user has misspelled a request to find information on the ‘Project Melbourne Shiproom’.
On the left-hand side, we have the experience all Microsoft 365 users are familiar with. Using keyword matching and the Microsoft Graph, the results attempt to predict what you are searching for and provide the closest match possible. In this example, our intent hasn’t been captured, however we do find links to adjacent content that we can interact with that may lead us to what we are searching for. We also see when those documents were last updated, by whom and the start of a document summary to help us decided which link to click on.
Contrast this to the Semantic index for Copilot results on the right. Our misspelled word has been recognized as organizational jargon and has autocorrected to provide a better starting search without having to retype a query. The result shows the most relevant paragraph in the most relevant document to your query about ‘project Melbourne’ without needing to open the document, reducing effort to find what you need. The Semantic Index for Copilot provides you with the latest shiproom deck available to give you the most up to date information, all at your fingertips without the need to specify that you are looking for the most recent document. Sharing insights have been enhanced to show if you have interacted with any of the content in the results previously, and to help you learn more about your query, we provide AI generated questions and answers in a single search pane which can help you think differently about the topic and help you reduce the amount of interaction you need to have to get the answer you need.
Microsoft 365, the Microsoft Graph and the Semantic Index for Copilot enable an unprecedented expressiveness for search, chat and copilots leveraging Microsoft 365 data. This expressiveness is foundational to surface the right grounding data to get the most out of Copilot for Microsoft 365 with your organizational data.
#19 Semantic Index for Copilot consists of five features: Organizational Terms, Document Excerpts, Semantic Search, More Context and Frequently Asked Questions. These features enable you to interact with your data in new ways, and help you find answers quickly.
Organizational terms, Semantic Search and More Context will be made available for Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 customers
Document Excerpts / Frequently Asked Questions will be enabled when a customer enables Copilot for Microsoft 365.
Organizational terms uniquely positioned to autocorrect misspelled organizational jargon across Microsoft 365 without administrative involvement.
Document Excerpts are extractive, informative answers to a query that attempt to convey all the important points of the query in the most relevant paragraph in the most relevant document. With document excerpts, a user can see the original text from the most relevant document within the search results pane, removing the need for the document to be opened.
Semantic Search captures the semantic meaning of your query, such that semantically similar text has similar numerical values to better understand the language. By using vectors, Semantic Search can understand relationships between different forms of words (E.g.: tech, technology, technologies”; or USA, U.S.A, United States, United States of America), and naturally capture synonyms to expand the amount of information that can be searched for. These improvements help Semantic Search understand the actual meaning of sentences, snippets, documents, meetings and identifies related assets to your query or sample content and prepare users for interacting with Copilot for Microsoft 365.
More context relies on the Microsoft Graph to provide collaboration, sharing and content insights to search results, giving you an indication of why you see what you see to make better decisions about which content to interact with. Understanding that Deb in your network modified a document 5 days ago not only helps you understand why a search result has been elevated, it also helps you understand more about the purpose of the document, the likely audience for which the document is written and the type of content the document will contain. These improvements to interacting with your data are enabled by default as a natural evolution to help you understand your data, without the need for administrative involvement or configuration.
Within the same search result, Frequently asked questions provide AI generated questions on a query to help you understand more about the query in a single search pane. The deep learning model mines and prioritizes questions and responses for display, which are both AI generated (i.e. not using user queries). You can review question headings at a glance in the search pane, and expand questions of interest to learn more.
