Creating a Geography Department Web Log (Blog) What is a blog? How can a blog be useful? How can you set up a blog? John Barlow – Acting Head of Geography, Archbishop Blanch School www.abblanchgeography.blogspot.com [email_address]
What is a blog? Definition: “ A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.” www.marketingterms.com I see a blog as a way of communicating information to pupils via the internet. This could be information relating to lessons in school, homework, revision, important dates etc.. A blog is very similar in some ways as writing an email, except that anyone who visits the site can view what you have written
How can a blog be useful? Follow-up information from lessons Year 11 – Study Leave Further research – G+T? AS/A2 Case Studies Homework Links to other schools Reminding pupils of key dates Link between school and home
Creating your own blog There are many websites that allow you to create a blog for free. The most popular ones around seem to be: Blogger.com (a branch of Google) Wordpress The blog that I have created is run from blogger.com. This program/website is relatively simple to understand as it uses a ‘drag and drop’ function and you don’t need to know how to be a computer expert! Blogger.com will guide you through the process of how to set up your blog. Time for you to have a go!! www.abblanchgeography.blogspot.com
Websites used alongside my blog: www.youtube.com – cut and paste the ‘embedded’ link from a video to post the video onto your blog. www.slideshare.net – A website that allows you to ‘upload’ your PowerPoint presentations to the internet. You can then ‘embed’ the PowerPoint into your blog. Very similar to Youtube. www.box.net – This website will provide you with 1Gb of FREE online storage space. This means that you can upload worksheets to box.net and then provide a link from your blog so that pupils can download their homework!!
