According to a recent report from mobile manufacturer
Ericsson, studies show that:
“by 2015, 80% of people accessing the
Internet will be doing so from mobile
devices.”
Perhaps more important for education:
“Internet- capable mobile devices will
outnumber computers within the next year.”
Johnson, L., Smith, R., Willis, H., Levine, A., and Haywood, K., (2011). The 2011 Horizon Report -
Austin, Texas: The New Media Consortium.
vMoving on with Mobile 8
“New generations of young people
who have grown up with digital
technology have high expectations
of anytime, anywhere learning, but
many learners do not have a clear
understanding of how courses
could or should use technology to
support learning. They are still
very much reliant on lecturers for
guidance.”

Editor's Notes

  • #8 Research by Dr Kay Munro and Rosemary Stenson from Glasgow University Library
  • #9 ********* Poll *********** Poll everywhere to create a benefits word cloud “Express in one or two words, a benefit of using mobile technologies for learning and supporting learners”
  • #10 Teaching across a region / communicating and collaborating online / developing a more blended model / providing a personalised learning experience – becoming more of a reality now. New communication methods - Peers play an important and often unacknowledged role in the learning experience. Whether through one to one text messages, instant messaging or facebook groups it mostly occurs without the support or knowledge of their tutors. IMO the significance of informal social activities for learning is underestimated and it places more emphasis on having effective communication channels. Very relevant for today as really the social media phenomenon is really fuelled by the use of mobile devices.
  • #12 ****** Poll ****** Facilitate Make it easier for students to engage with learning / more convenient / more flexible / familiar technology Support Communication regardless of location / accessibility affordances are becoming clear / facilitating peer support and promoting the sense of community and mutual support Extend & Enhance the Reach & Scope Provide learning in authentic environments / using the cloud for game keeping / providing engaging materials / perceived as part of the modernization of learning / working with the cloud services promotes and culture of communication, collaboration & sharing.
  • #13 Five phases A hype cycle in can be broken down into five phases: "Technology Trigger" — The first phase of a hype cycle is the "technology trigger" or breakthrough, product launch or other event that generates significant press and interest. "Peak of Inflated Expectations" — In the next phase, a frenzy of publicity typically generates over-enthusiasm and unrealistic expectations. There may be some successful applications of a technology, but there are typically more failures. "Trough of Disillusionment" — Technologies enter the "trough of disillusionment" because they fail to meet expectations and quickly become unfashionable. Consequently, the press usually abandons the topic and the technology. "Slope of Enlightenment" — Although the press may have stopped covering the technology, some businesses continue through the "slope of enlightenment" and experiment to understand the benefits and practical application of the technology. "Plateau of Productivity" — A technology reaches the "plateau of productivity" as the benefits of it become widely demonstrated and accepted. The technology becomes increasingly stable and evolves in second and third generations. The final height of the plateau varies according to whether the technology is broadly applicable or benefits only a niche market. The term is now used more broadly in the marketing of new technologies.
  • #15 Institutional goals Mobile learning aligns well with many goals of educational institutions, including: Taken out into the field (contextualised) / accessed on their own terms (personalised) / always on, always connected (immediacy) / ease with which user generated content including multimedia can be created Curriculum redesign Personalisation of learning Student satisfaction Digital literacies Reducing costs (doing more with less) Graduate attributes and employability Enhancing assessment and feedback Widening participation Improving student engagement and retention Energy efficiency
  • #16 Note Taking – Audio Note This app enables you to record a lecture, interview, conversation or meeting and take written notes at the same time. Play back of the audio is synced with the written note so you can dip in as needed. Templates can be added prior to sessions where the app is to be used to assist the learning process. Cloud Storage & File Sharing - Evernote This app is a cloud service that enables you to add notes/audio/video/website links and digital items to your online account. Log in from anywhere with any browser to access your store. Apps, bookmarklets and quick access tools are available for most devices.
