  What is it?World’s largest community for sharing presentations and slideshows Permitted: PowerPoint, OpenOffice or PDF files Can be used by individuals or organizations Great for sharing ideas, networking with others or even to market a business! Presentations are assignd a permanent URL and can be downloaded, “tagged,” or used to insert into blogs or websites with an author’s permission IT’S FREE!!!

  Who runs thewebsite? SlideShare is based out of San Francisco and New Delhi (India). Founded by: Rashmi Sinha (CEO), Jonathan Boutelle (“Head Geek”) and Amit Ranjan (Production Manager) Investors: capital funding from Venrock, David Siminoff and Angel Investors Board of Advisors: Guy Kawasaki, Hal R. Varian, Ross Mayfield and Dave McClure

  Why use it?SlideShare is available to a wide audience Record of your presentation is indexed by internet browser search engines and shows up on search results if able to be viewed publicly Terrific method to share a product or business Alternative for those not able to attend a presentation or catch up on missed handouts

  What can Ido on the SlideShare website? Share presentations privately or publicly up to 100MB. Incorporate audio into your slides “ sell” your ideas online! Join other SlideShare groups that share your interests Unfortunately, Microsoft Office 2007 is not yet supported on the SlideShare website.

  Membership is free,but there are Terms of use for the website. Users are expected to respect and trust other participants The SlideShare community includes people of all types. Everyone has different views and backgrounds. Even if a user does not agree with someone else, he/she is expected to interact politely with others. Copyright laws are expected to be followed. Only upload slides with authorization. Slideshows can only be uploaded with a registered membership to the site. Accounts are monitored for misuse. SlideShare has hopes that its users will self-monitor uploading, but will “step-in” when necessary. There are guidelines a SlideShare user must follow…

  SlideShare users cannotdisplay or utilize explicit content, promote violence, display illegal content or harass other users. Accounts will be blocked either temporarily or permanently if the SlideShare team feels as if a visitor or group violates this guideline. Invading the privacy of other users, stalking users or revealing others’ personal information is strictly prohibited. It reflects negatively on the community and will not be tolerated. Users are not permitted to use SlideShare for spam purposes. Although the site can be used for “marketing” a business or product, not everyone appreciates these presentations or messages. Presentations/messages deemed as spam will be removed from the website. More rules?! There are guidelines a SlideShare user must follow…

  Helpful hints forusing SlideShare If using a slideshow for a conference presentation: pick a tag for your conference; tell speakers to upload their presentations and tag it with the conference tag Do not password protect your presentation – the conversion to the website may fail Remove macros before uploading the presentation slides Exotic or rare fonts may not be converted correctly Try not to upload files larger than 100MB Transitions and animations are not supported by SlideShare

  If you areusing Keynote (with Macs), save your presentation in the PDF format before uploading it Should your file not look right after uploading it, try converting it to a PDF file and uploading it again No particular graphic/photo resolution is necessary for uploading. Using high resolution will take longer to upload/convert. Using low resolution may make the item appear distorted.   Other SlideShare Websitefeatures You can send messages to a SlideShare user, privately On your profile you can add a user as a “contact” and keep track of their most recent presentations You can search for other SlideShare users Presentations can be bookmarked in your account Supports Creative Commons (find more by clicking here ) Allows a user to utilize a filter that will allowing viewing of a slideshow in a language of his/her choice (11 language choices) Users may leave comments about slideshows Slidecasting: play any slidedeck synchronized with an audio file, free!

  What are theadvantage of SlideShare used in education? Keeps students engaged Makes learning fun Excellent for students unable to sit in a classroom setting and still obtain knowledge It’s free and doesn’t effect school budgets! Students can interact outside of school while participating in the learning process Appropriate for distance education Under proper parent and teacher supervision, SlideShare can be a valuable tool, both within the classroom and outside school walls

  The possibilities ofusing SlideShare are pretty much endless! Helps for the growing dependency of students on technology and gives teachers a method to connect with their students Teachers can refer students to slideshows or slidecasts on the internet – creating a more interesting way to do research! Allows the students to interact with a diverse variety of people with diverse backgrounds Great opportunity for collaboration Builds media literacy skills Assists students to break away from the dependency on their teacher for information Helps student seek out internet tools to use with care and awareness Allows student to work with a medium they can relate to
