Technology in Mathematics and Science Instruction (Chapter 11) By: Adrienne Anderson, Grant McCreight,  and Stephanie Slaviero
Top Concepts Graphing Calculators This will help students with hands on learning when doing math problems. Spreadsheets or Excel This helps students with problem solving. Mutimedia- PowerPoint and Videos This can show how things grow in science, or how to solve a math problem
How devices such as scanners, cameras and video can be used in math and science Different uses Take pictures for science projects Use pictures for counting, comparing, number operations Record videos for science projects
How to use productivity tools for word, databases and spreadsheets Use word processing for math and science projects Databases and spreadsheets can be used after each project tools can be used for problem solving.
How to use multimedia tools Makes subjects more interesting Keeps students attention Animations can be used for demonstrations Video clips can be used for word problems Graphics can be used to display data
How to use resources for adaptive/assistive devices for students with special needs Online tools such as calculators websites that help with problem solving provide students with access to lab equiptment that can be connected to a computer use larger scopes and magnifying tools science-based websites
How teachers and students can practice socially responsible, ethical, and legal use of technology, information, and software resources related to your topic Using different computer or internet games. Use internet and computer safety. Use computer privacy.  Teachers should monitor websites and only allow certain ones.
How teachers and students can adhere to copyright laws and guidelines in the access and use of information from various technologies When using the different calculators and other mathmatical tools. When using the different science materials, this can include the equipment.
How an existing WebQuest can be used as an activity for your topic Title: MATH FRACTIONS AND THE FUN OF IT ALL....ADDING FRACTIONS USING COOL MATH GAMES.  URL: http://questgarden.com/101/05/7/100413162426/process.htm. This webquest will help students with adding fractions, it also gives some game ideas that you can play with the students. It is also very easy to read and gives a good step by step process when teaching this lesson.     Title: Subtraction of Integers. URL: http://questgarden.com/103/50/9/100517184823/process.htm.  This webquest will help students with the subtraction of integers.  This webquest also gives ideas about playing games with the students.  This one was a little harder to read with the different colors they used.    Title: Changes in Science URL:  http://questgarden.com/75/79/4/090120055925/process.htm. This webquest tells about how different things in nature change, how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly and how a seeds turns into a plant.  This website give good science experiments on how to watch the different things change.
Examples of instructional software that can be used for your topic Calculators (Graphing) Different computer and internet games Different science equipment
Examples of instructional software that can be used for your topic Geometer’s Sketchpad GLOBE program NASA internet sites Microsoft Excel Instructional games
Examples of tools or resources that teachers can use for developing teleresearch or telecommunication projects for student related to your topic Using virtual manipulatives- Manipula Math with Java ( www.ies.co.jp/math/java/index.html ) Motivating skill building and practice- PLATO Learning ( www.plato.com ) Supporting math-related communications- Math Forum – Ask Dr. Math ( www.mathforum.org/dr.math/ )
Examples of rubrics that can be used for assessing student outcomes for your topic Using virtual manipulatives- Manipula Math with Java ( www.ies.co.jp/math/java/index.html ) Motivating skill building and practice- PLATO Learning ( www.plato.com ) Supporting math-related communications- Math Forum – Ask Dr. Math ( www.mathforum.org/dr.math/ )
Example and description integration idea of appropriate lesson plans for your topic Fun Mathematics Lessons - A comprehensive PreK-12 site that contains math lessons and activities on graphing, problem solving, algebra, fractions, counting, exponents, fractals, ratios and proportions, geometry, and calculus ( www.nycareerzone.org/text/resources/index.jsp?section=142 Math.com, The World of Math Online has free math lessons, math help and lesson plans from basic math to algebra, geometry and more. Contains hundreds of Teacher  created unique lesson plans ( http://www.math.com/teachers/centers/lesson%20plans.html ) PBS Teacher Source-  a teacher resource service utilizing the power of telecommunications to provide quality resources and services to teachers of mathematics, science and other subjects in grades K-12 with over 3000 lesson plans and activities ( http://www.pbs.org/teachers )
Summary Technology is very useful in the classroom when teaching math and science.  You can use a lot of different tools to help explain or show a concept.  Some examples are different calculators, and different multimedia examples.
Assessment What steps should teachers and students use when dealing with social responsibilities? What are some tools that you can use to help assist students with special needs? What is a useful instructional software that can be used by teachers?
Answers The teacher should only allow specific websites, computer and internet safety and privacy. Provide students with lab equipment that is easy to use.  Use computer equipment that allows the students that allows what is being magnified to be displayed on a larger screen Microsoft Excel, Geometers Sketchpad, Globe Program.
