Truth behind why the Spice Girls broke up - and it may surprise you
The Spice Girls were a global phenomenon in the 1990s but it all came crashing down with the girls going their separate ways just a few years after seeing chart success
Netflix's Victoria Beckham documentary has catapulted the Spice Girls back into the spotlight, with countless fans wondering why their girl power reign came to a close.
Victoria Beckham might be better known for her fashion empire today, but her rise to stardom started as Posh Spice in the legendary 1990s girl group the Spice Girls.
Joined by Emma Bunton, Melanie B, Geri Halliwell Horner and Mel C, the Spice Girls achieved genuine global domination, shifting millions of albums and raking in an incredible $500 million before their breakup in 1998.
Reflecting on the band's dissolution in the Netflix series, Victoria revealed, "I went from being up here with the Spice Girls, being on tour, traveling the world.
"Everything was so fast. We were like a tornado. And then, all of a sudden, it stopped.", reports the Manchester Evening News.
"When the Spice Girls finished, it was so extreme. One minute, I'm spreading the word of girl power, and then the next minute I'm a wife in a flat in Manchester, not really having any friends, living a long way away from my family.
"And I found that transition really, really difficult."
Why did the Spice Girls break up?
Tensions began emerging within the Spice Girls when Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell Horner announced her departure from the group in 1998.
She revealed years later in the documentary Giving You Everything, "I felt I didn't belong any more.
"They didn't need me anymore, really, and I definitely felt very redundant."
Mel B revealed on Larry King Now that Geri's departure was particularly "bad" timing, as Scary Spice disclosed that Ginger Spice had walked away on her birthday without giving anyone a heads up.
The remaining Spice Girls pushed forward with their Spiceworld tour and laid down tracks for their Forever album despite losing a key member.
However, this marked the start of their downfall as each member began prioritizing their individual careers and personal lives, ultimately resulting in the group declaring a break in 2000.
The quintet reunited for their comeback tour in 2007 before delivering their swan song at the 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony.
During one of their Reunion tour shows, Geri finally owned up to being the catalyst behind the band's split and offered her apologies.
Addressing both her bandmates and the crowd, Geri declared, "I need to say something I should have said a long time ago.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry I left. I was just being a brat. It is so good to be back with the girls that I love."
