Portrayed by British actress Rosy McEwen, Verity is an increasingly unsettling presence in the life of Maria (Siena Kelly), who is disturbed to see her at her place of work.

The synopsis for Bete Noire, written by Charlie Brooker, reads: “Confectionary whizz kid Maria is unnerved when her former schoolmate Verity joins the company she works at — because there’s something altogether odd about Verity, something only Maria seems to notice…”

While the episode will leave Netflix fans with plenty of questions, some will be wondering where they recognise the actress from…

Where have you seen Verity actress Rosy McEwen before?

British star Rosy McEwen portrays Verity in Black Mirror season 7, episode 2, Black Noire.

This marks her second role for Netflix, as she has previously appeared in series The Alienist alongside A-list actors like Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning.

Her other roles include playing Christopher Eccleston’s daughter in the Channel 4 miniseries Close to Me and the lead in the 2022 independent film Blue Jean, which won her a British Independent Film Award.

She has also starred alongside Eddie Marsan in the science fiction film Vesper and opposite Julia Garner in Rosemary’s Baby prequel, Apartment 7A.

Eagle-eyed fans of BBC’s Waking the Dead or Cranford might also recognise her, as she had early television roles in both series.

What is Rosy McEwen’s link to Saoirse Ronan?

When Rosy was 12 years old, she auditioned for the part of Briony in the film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s Atonement, which stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.

She made it to the final two, but lost out to Ladybird actress Saoirse Ronan, whose acting career launched following the success of the film.

Speaking about her audition to the Guardian, Rosy later admitted with a laugh: “My mum loves this story. Claim to fame.”

She also described how she almost didn’t pursue a career in acting as she got older, despite her love for the craft, explaining: “I was terrified of it not working out. It’s such a hard job, in the sense that you can give it everything you’ve got but if the stars don’t align for whatever reason … I was frightened to fail.”

However, the star has since gone on to become an award-winning actress, and is set to star in two other projects this year, including Prime Video’s Scarpetta with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.
