LEGO reveals Back to the Future set and fans are surprised by how cheap it is

LEGO added the Time Machine from Back to the Future to its line of famous fictional cars, the Speed Champions. The toymaker is selling these toy cars at affordable prices.

“Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!”

That sentiment is certainly true for the latest fictional car to join LEGO’s Speed Champions lineup. The DeLorean from Back to the Future is available for pre-order on LEGO’s website and Amazon and will be shipped out on Jan. 1, 2026.

The special set 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future includes a brick-built toy car that can be transformed into the flying version. Plus, the set comes with Doc Brown and Marty McFly that can be placed into the car’s cockpit. Perhaps the best part for LEGO fans is the price point on this specialty set.

It’s listed for $27.99. Great Scott!

According to LEGO’s website, “LEGO Speed Champions car building kits let kids and passionate car fans build replica versions of some of the world’s most famous vehicles.”

Other famous fictional cars in LEGO’s Speed Champions line include Lightning McQueen, the 2 Fast 2 Furious pink Honda S2000, and the Ford Mustang Dark Horse Sports Car, among others.

All of these cars allow LEGO fans to get into the driver’s seat of some of their favorite on-screen cars, and most of the cars in the line fall in the $26 to $27 price range.

This is extremely affordable for the everyday consumer compared to some of the other famous car models LEGO sells. For instance, the Back to the Future Time Machine from the toymaker’s Icons collection is listed at a jaw-dropping price of $199.99.

LEGO fans' reaction to cheap price of Back to the Future car

The pricing of these specialty cars seemed to have surprised LEGO fans, as many collaborations and collector’s sets are making people’s wallets hurt.

On an X post with over 11,000 reposts, a user asked the simple question, “Why’s the price affordable?”

“Look at that licensing, my god, it’s even less than 10 cents a piece,” one user replied. The set contains 357 pieces, so if you do the math per piece, it is a great deal.

“When Christmas approaches and lego goes back to the 2000’s prices,” another user wrote.

“Lego remembers their main audience was kids and teens and not gazillionaires once in a blue moon,” someone else pointed out.

Others think the pricing is on par for the model, considering it’s relatively small without a ton of fancy features. Per LEGO’s website, the car model is 4 inches high, 6.5 inches long, and 2.5 inches wide.
