Indiana girl, 12, dies alone in her bedroom with common health issue as parents 'failed to help'
Brent Bredhold, 39, faces up to 40 years behind bars after being found guilty of neglecting his 12-year-old daughter, Alice Bredhold, who died due to complications from diabetes
An Indiana father is facing a 40-year prison sentence after being found legally responsible for his 12-year-old daughter's preventable death from complications related to poorly-managed diabetes.
Brent Bredhold, 39, was convicted by a jury on one count of neglect of a dependent causing death following the heartbreaking demise of his daughter, Alice Bredhold.
Alice was tragically discovered lifeless on her bedroom floor on July 4, 2024, at their family home on South New York Avenue in Evansville, Indiana. Investigations revealed that Alice had been suffering from diabetes, but her parents had failed to assist her in managing the chronic condition. It comes after an evil dad's incest secret was hidden in a family photo before all seven were killed in a massacre.
Prior to Alice's untimely death, the Department of Child Services had reached out to her parents due to her alarmingly high blood sugar levels recorded at school, as reported by Law&Crime.
The prosecution highlighted a school nurse's report of 44 readings over 300 and 14 readings above 600 in the weeks leading up to Alice's death. The Centers for Disease Control states that for individuals with diabetes, blood sugar levels less than 180 two hours after starting a meal are considered normal targets.
The state argued that it was the duty of Alice's parents to manage her health condition, given she was only 12 years old. "Kids don't understand the value of daily routines," prosecutor Winston Lin told the jury. "With Type 1 diabetes, it is critical."

He went on to claim that Alice's death could have been predicted under the circumstances, referencing individuals who characterized her passing as "a shocking event but not surprising."
Prosecutors revealed Alice had been admitted to the hospital multiple times since the age of 10, and after one incident, the Bredhold family secured the help of a pediatric psychologist.
However, even at that point, Lin stated, Brent Bredhold "did not follow through with the psychologist's professional guidance."
Bredhold's defense lawyer, Dawnya Taylor, claimed prosecutors may have misled jurors into thinking he was a single father — which he isn't.
Rather, she contended, the defendant was frequently away from home and unable to handle day-to-day responsibilities due to his railroad job, which regularly required him to travel for over two days consecutively.
Brent Bredhold is slated for sentencing on Oct. 23, while the trial of Alice's mother, Ashley Marie Bredhold, 39 — who faces an identical charge — is scheduled to start in February 2026.
