Irish politician apologizes for dressing up as Barack Obama in brown makeup

Eoin Hayes, a Social Democrats TD, said he wore the make-up at a Halloween party 16 years ago and that a newspaper intended to publish the images on Tuesday

An Irish Social Democrat TD has issued an apology for donning "brown makeup" to impersonate Former U.S. President Barack Obama during a Halloween event 16 years ago.

Eoin Hayes revealed that a newspaper planned to release the images on Tuesday, referring to the incident as a "massive blunder."

In a statement shared on X, Mr. Hayes stated that dressing as Obama was a 'huge mistake':

"At a Halloween party 16 years ago, while President of the Students’ Union in University College Cork, I dressed up as someone I greatly admired at the time.

"U.S. President Barack Obama - whose reelection campaign I went on to work for in 2012.

"I have been informed that a news outlet possesses photographs of this evening, which they will publish tomorrow (Tuesday).

"While I didn’t have an understanding of how hurtful it was at the time.


"I came to recognise that in the intervening years and I am so profoundly sorry.

"What I did was completely inappropriate and a huge mistake.", reports the Irish Mirror.

"I condemn racism in all its forms and do not condone that behavior under any circumstances.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and from the bottom of my heart.

"I apologize for any and all hurt caused by what I did and the images of that night.”
