The 39-year old woman was raped as she and her husband were camping in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for a cycling trip.
Police said that the attackers tied up the victims husband and raped the woman in his presence. The men also robbed the couple of a laptop, cellphone and cash.
The suspects, ages ranging from 22 to 30 were from a local village near the campsite.
Five of the men were detained and confessed to the incident, and a sixth man was arrested later on. The BBC reports that one of the suspects was convicted of assault and robbery, but not rape. All of the perpetrators received life sentences.
News of the incident triggered protests organized by opposition lawmakers in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, CNN reports. They called on the state’s home minister to resign due to an alleged “collapse of law and order,” as Ajay Singh, an opposition leader, put it at the time.
The incident was one of many high-profile rape cases that occrued within that year in India.
In December 2013, a 23-year-old Indian woman was gang raped and left for dead on the side of the road. The physiotherapy student was beaten with an iron rod, raped, and left for dead on the side of the road the evening of Dec. 16. Her male companion was also beaten, and the woman later died from her injuries. That case sparked nationwide protests, and five men were charged with the murder and rape of the student.
And in June, three men were arrested near the resort town of Manali in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh for the alleged gang rape of an American tourist.

The woman was reportedly attacked when she accepted a ride from a group of men near Manali. According to the AP, the woman's complaint alleges that after accepting the ride, she was driven to a secluded spot and raped.
