New York under frost advisory as cold snap grips region while storm system approaches
The weekend will begin with a cold snap in New York, with frost expected as temperatures dip to 33 degrees, before a storm system approaches the region on Sunday
A cold snap is set to grip New York as we head into the weekend, with temperatures set to plummet while a storm brews.
The frosty temperatures come as the region is recovering from a powerful Nor'easter that killed a Brooklyn woman who was struck in the head by a dislodged solar panel outside of an outdoor parking lot amid high winds. It's still set to be a breezy on Friday morning but winds will be calmer and there will be plenty of sun.
However, temperatures are set to drop overnight and forecasters have also issued a warning to small craft mariners.
New York under frost advisory
Temperatures are set to fall this evening and New Yorkers are likely to wake up to frost on Saturday morning with temperatures as low as 33 degrees, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
A frost advisory has been issued in Northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland Counties in New York. In Connecticut, Northern Fairfield, Northern Middlesex, Northern New Haven, and Northern New London Counties are also under a frost advisory, as is Western Passaic County in New Jersey.
The advisory is in place from 11pm this evening to 9am EDT Saturday. "Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered," the NWS warns.
The agency advises: "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold."
Small craft advisory amid 'hazardous conditions'
A small craft advisory has also been issued for Sandy Hook, NJ, to Montauk Point, NY, out 20 nautical miles.
North winds between 15 to 25 knots and seas between three to six feet are expected. "Conditions will be hazardous to small craft," the NWS warns.
The small craft advisory will remain in effect until 11am Friday morning. "Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions," the NWS adds.
Storm system approaching New York
Friday is set to be a bright and cool day in New York. Afternoon highs will only reach the low 60s.
However, conditions are set to become a bit milder throughout the weekend. Temperatures are set to rise into the mid-60s to near 70 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
Cloud cover is forecast to increase late Sunday as a storm system approaches the area. Rain is likely to begin on Sunday night and last through to early Monday afternoon.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, while much of the US may see a milder fall, New York and the surrounding Northeast are expected to experience colder and drier conditions than usual.
