I run macOS Big Sur and a recent update of the Slack app refused to start for me recently.
I went through the list of versions here and found by manual verification that v4.45.x seems to be the last version that will open on Big Sur.

Additionally, if adding a new cask:

  • Named the cask according to the token reference.
  • Checked the cask was not already refused (add your cask's name to the end of the search field).
  • brew audit --cask --new <cask> worked successfully.
  • HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1 brew install --cask <cask> worked successfully.
  • brew uninstall --cask <cask> worked successfully.

The audit is currently returning an error.
There is a nested application (the renderer engine) that requires Monterey or newer on the latest version, although the primary version suggests that only Big Sur is required.

This PR will need to wait until Homebrew/brew#20865 is resolved.

The Catalina version should be removed. It no longer works as of March 15th of this year: https://slack.com/help/articles/1500001836081-Slack-support-lifecycle-for-operating-systems-app-versions-and-browsers#mac-1

Thanks @bevanjkay , was a bit confused by that minimum version build failure.

Do you happen to know where in the macOS .dmg or .app that supported OS versions are stored/specified? I went digging a bit myself but couldn't find anything obvious.

Yes, the application will have an ‘info.plist` file that includes a declaration of the minimum macOS version required.
