Fixes #17405

Apart from fixing the crash I fix two obvious bugs I noticed while making this PR.

Thanks, I was just looking into this, had pretty similar diff. There's one more bug in my implementation, I will merge this and add the additional fix

Yes, I also have #17424, and maybe one more.
