The global useNodeNativeTSLoader flag gets permanently disabled after the first failure, which could prevent recovery in environments where Node.js native TypeScript support might work intermittently.
View Details
Analysis
The useNodeNativeTSLoader variable is declared at module level (line 108) and gets set to false permanently when Node.js native TypeScript resolution fails (line 139). This creates a problematic global state where:
-
Permanent disabling: Once any config file fails to load with native resolution, all subsequent config files in the same process will skip attempting native resolution, even if the failure was temporary or specific to one file.
-
Process-wide impact: In environments where Next.js processes multiple projects or configurations (like development servers, build processes, or worker processes), a failure in one config affects all others.
-
No recovery mechanism: There's no way for the flag to be reset to
trueeven if Node.js native support becomes available later (e.g., after a temporary filesystem issue resolves).
This could lead to performance degradation where the system unnecessarily falls back to the slower legacy TypeScript compilation for all configs after the first failure, rather than attempting the faster native resolution on a per-config basis.
Fix: Move the useNodeNativeTSLoader variable inside the transpileConfig function scope, or implement a more sophisticated retry mechanism that doesn't permanently disable the feature process-wide.

It's unnecessarily expensive to always import() before fallback.

So we're just spawning another child e.g. next dev? That will break the debugger ports.
I was thinking we just don't do our routine if we detect process.features.typescript instead.
That property won't exist in versions without TS stripping support.
We should probably warn if we detect --no-experimental-strip-types when you have a next.config.ts. And that warning can be disabled in prod once we start loading resolved configs only in prod.

Do we expect users to add NODE_OPTIONS="--experimental-transform-types" flag for versions that aren't enabled by default (23.6.0+)?

If they want native behavior, yes. But that's why we still have the old behavior which we need to keep to not break existing semantics.

Got it, I'll follow that up with a docs update.

The native TypeScript resolution logic has a critical flaw where it doesn't check for the presence of enabling flags (--experimental-strip-types or --experimental-transform-types) on Node.js versions 22.7-22.9, causing it to always fall back to legacy resolution even when the feature is properly enabled.

Analysis
The code has a logic gap in the native TypeScript loader detection. For Node.js versions 22.7.0 to 22.9.x, process.features.typescript is falsy but the TypeScript resolution feature is available when enabled via flags like --experimental-strip-types or --experimental-transform-types.
The current logic flow is:
- If
process.features.typescriptis truthy → use native resolution (✅ correct for v22.10+) - If
--no-experimental-strip-typesis present → warn and disable (✅ correct) - Otherwise → disable native loader without attempting import (❌ incorrect)
The problem is in step 3: when neither process.features.typescript is truthy nor the disable flag is present, the code should check if enabling flags are present and attempt the native import. Instead, it immediately falls back to legacy resolution.
This means that on Node.js 22.7-22.9 with NODE_OPTIONS=--experimental-transform-types (as used in the tests), the native resolution will never be attempted, and the feature will always fall back to the slower legacy transpilation.
The fix should check for enabling flags (--experimental-strip-types or --experimental-transform-types) and attempt the native import when they're present, only falling back to legacy resolution when the feature is truly unavailable or disabled.

Yeah, this will work above 22.10.0+.
Not a big deal since the first LTS of v22 is v22.11.0.

Can we test a feature that's specific to the native version instead of a negative assertion?

Added top-level await to config to detect native mode.

Following up on #83240 When using ESM syntax in `next.config.ts` on a CJS project, Node.js first assumes it as CJS, then parses it into ESM again, giving a warning: ``` (node:27529) [MODULE_TYPELESS_PACKAGE_JSON] Warning: Module type of file://.../next.config.ts is not specified and it doesn't parse as CommonJS. Reparsing as ES module because module syntax was detected. This incurs a performance overhead. To eliminate this warning, add "type": "module" to .../package.json. ``` Therefore, give users the option to use `next.config.mts` which Node.js expects ESM syntax. The tests are a copy of `next-config-ts-native-ts` and only renamed the config to mts. --------- Co-authored-by: Sebastian "Sebbie" Silbermann <sebastian.silbermann@vercel.com>
This PR adds docs for using Node.js native TS resolver for `next.config.ts`. It states: - Supports Node.js native TS resolver - Why use it - How to use it - Restrictions - Why use `next.config.mts` I didn't mention how much it's faster compared to the legacy resolver (~68% faster in the hello world app - [link](#83240)) because the experience may vary for users. --------- Co-authored-by: Joseph <joseph.chamochumbi@vercel.com> Co-authored-by: Abdón Rodríguez <a@abdonrd.com>

Why?
Since
next.config.tswas resolved via require-hook, it had a restriction with Native ESM syntax, like top-level await, dynamic import, and Node.js ESM APIs likeimport.meta.url. There were previous attempts to resolve this via the ESM loader, but those approaches (#68365, #83120) ended up adding ~39ms compared to the require-hook due to the loader registration time. However, Node.js natively supports TS since v22.7.0 under the experimental flag, and was enabled by default since v22.18.0. Therefore, this PR feature detects the Node.js version and uses its feature to resolve
next.config.tsand allows native ESM syntax. As a comparison, the usage of ESM loader vs Native TS on a "Large App":
