## Middleware to Proxy Migration

The `middleware` file convention is deprecated and has been renamed to `proxy` as of Next.js v16. This document outlines the changes and how to upgrade your code.

### Summary of changes

- Rename the `middleware.ts` file to `proxy.ts`
- Change the export from `export function middleware` to `export function proxy`
- The first parameter is now the request directly, not an event
- Remove the second parameter (event) - use async/await instead
- Update the import from `next/middleware` to `next/server` if needed

### Explanation

Middleware has been renamed to Proxy to better reflect its purpose as a server-side proxy layer. The API has been simplified to be more intuitive and aligned with modern web standards.

## Basic API Changes

### Before

```ts filename="middleware.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import type { NextRequest, NextFetchEvent } from 'next/server'
export function middleware(request: NextRequest, event: NextFetchEvent) {
 return NextResponse.next()
}
export const config = {
 matcher: '/:path*',
}
```

### After

```ts filename="proxy.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import type { NextRequest } from 'next/server'
export function proxy(request: NextRequest) {
 return NextResponse.next()
}
export const config = {
 matcher: '/:path*',
}
```

## Cookies

### Summary of changes

- The cookie API has improved and is now more intuitive
- Use `response.cookies.set()` instead of direct assignment

### Explanation

Cookies in Proxy have been simplified for better usability. The new API provides clearer methods for setting, getting, and deleting cookies.

### How to upgrade

Use the new cookies API methods for better clarity and type safety.

#### Before

```ts filename="middleware.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
export function middleware() {
 const response = new NextResponse()
 // set a cookie
 response.cookie('hello', 'world')
 // deleting a cookie will mark it as expired
 response.clearCookie('hello')
 return response
}
```

#### After

```ts filename="proxy.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
export function proxy() {
 const response = new NextResponse()
 // set a cookie
 response.cookies.set('hello', 'world')
 // deleting a cookie will mark it as expired
 response.cookies.delete('hello')
 return response
}
```

### More Cookie Examples

```ts filename="proxy.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
export function proxy() {
 const response = new NextResponse()
 // set a cookie
 response.cookies.set('vercel', 'fast')
 // set another cookie with options
 response.cookies.set('nextjs', 'awesome', { path: '/test' })
 // get all the details of a cookie
 const { value, ...options } = response.cookies.getWithOptions('vercel')
 console.log(value) // => 'fast'
 console.log(options) // => { name: 'vercel', Path: '/test' }
 // deleting a cookie will mark it as expired
 response.cookies.delete('vercel')
 return response
}
```

## New User-Agent Helper

### Summary of changes

- Accessing the user agent is no longer available on the request object
- We've added a new `userAgent` helper to reduce Proxy size

### Explanation

To help reduce the size of your Proxy, we have extracted the user agent from the request object and created a new helper `userAgent`.

The helper is imported from `next/server` and allows you to opt in to using the user agent. The helper gives you access to the same properties that were available from the request object.

### How to upgrade

- Import the `userAgent` helper from `next/server`
- Destructure the properties you need to work with

#### Before

```ts filename="middleware.ts"
import { NextRequest, NextResponse } from 'next/server'
export function middleware(request: NextRequest) {
 const url = request.nextUrl
 const viewport = request.ua.device.type === 'mobile' ? 'mobile' : 'desktop'
 url.searchParams.set('viewport', viewport)
 return NextResponse.rewrite(url)
}
```

#### After

```ts filename="proxy.ts"
import { NextRequest, NextResponse, userAgent } from 'next/server'
export function proxy(request: NextRequest) {
 const url = request.nextUrl
 const { device } = userAgent(request)
 const viewport = device.type === 'mobile' ? 'mobile' : 'desktop'
 url.searchParams.set('viewport', viewport)
 return NextResponse.rewrite(url)
}
```

## No More Page Match Data

### Summary of changes

- Use [`URLPattern`](https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/API/URLPattern) to check if a Proxy is being invoked for a certain page match

### Explanation

Currently, Proxy estimates whether you are serving an asset of a Page based on the Next.js routes manifest (internal configuration). This value was previously surfaced through `request.page`.

To make page and asset matching more accurate, we are now using the web standard `URLPattern` API.

### How to upgrade

Use [`URLPattern`](https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/API/URLPattern) to check if a Proxy is being invoked for a certain page match.

#### Before

```ts filename="middleware.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import type { NextRequest, NextFetchEvent } from 'next/server'
export function middleware(request: NextRequest, event: NextFetchEvent) {
 const { params } = event.request.page
 const { locale, slug } = params
 if (locale && slug) {
 const { search, protocol, host } = request.nextUrl
 const url = new URL(`${protocol}//${locale}.${host}/${slug}${search}`)
 return NextResponse.redirect(url)
 }
}
```

#### After

```ts filename="proxy.ts"
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import type { NextRequest } from 'next/server'
const PATTERNS = [
 [
 new URLPattern({ pathname: '/:locale/:slug' }),
 ({ pathname }) => pathname.groups,
 ],
]
const params = (url) => {
 const input = url.split('?')[0]
 let result = {}
 for (const [pattern, handler] of PATTERNS) {
 const patternResult = pattern.exec(input)
 if (patternResult !== null && 'pathname' in patternResult) {
 result = handler(patternResult)
 break
 }
 }
 return result
}
export function proxy(request: NextRequest) {
 const { locale, slug } = params(request.url)
 if (locale && slug) {
 const { search, protocol, host } = request.nextUrl
 const url = new URL(`${protocol}//${locale}.${host}/${slug}${search}`)
 return NextResponse.redirect(url)
 }
}
```

## Executing Proxy on All Requests

### Summary of changes

- Proxy is now executed for _all_ requests, including `_next`

### Explanation

Proxy now runs on all incoming requests to provide comprehensive request handling and routing capabilities.

For cases where Proxy is used for authorization, you should use `rewrite`/`redirect` to Pages that show an authorization error, login forms, or to an API Route.

Analysis
Broken documentation links to deleted middleware error pages
What fails: Documentation and runtime error messages contain links to deleted middleware error pages that return 404s:
/docs/messages/middleware-upgrade-guide/docs/messages/middleware-relative-urls/docs/messages/middleware-new-signature/docs/messages/middleware-request-page/docs/messages/middleware-parse-user-agent/docs/messages/nested-middleware/docs/messages/returning-response-body-in-middleware
These pages were deleted in commit e5a70a2 ("Remove middleware docs") when middleware was renamed to proxy, but the references were not updated.
How to reproduce:
- Look at these files which still reference deleted pages:
docs/01-app/03-api-reference/03-file-conventions/proxy.mdxline 731docs/02-pages/02-guides/upgrading/version-12.mdxline 29 (appears twice)packages/next/errors.jsonline 62packages/next/src/build/utils.tsline 1450packages/next/src/server/web/error.tslines 9, 17, 25packages/next/src/server/web/spec-extension/fetch-event.tslines 74, 85packages/next/src/server/web/spec-extension/request.tslines 87, 96packages/next/src/server/web/utils.tsline 148test/e2e/middleware-responses/test/index.test.tslines 38, 49
- Users visiting these links will receive 404 errors
Result: Broken error documentation links prevent developers from accessing help content when they encounter errors.
Expected: All error documentation links should point to existing pages or documentation sections.
Solution implemented:
- Updated all references from
middleware-*to correspondingproxy-*error pages:middleware-upgrade-guide→proxy-upgrade-guidemiddleware-relative-urls→proxy-relative-urlsmiddleware-new-signature→proxy-new-signaturemiddleware-request-page→proxy-request-pagemiddleware-parse-user-agent→proxy-parse-user-agentnested-middleware→nested-proxy
- Created
errors/proxy-upgrade-guide.mdxwith updated migration documentation from middleware to proxy - Removed broken link references in test file for
returning-response-body-in-middlewaresince no proxy equivalent exists (the restriction was lifted in proxy)

The file proxyClientMaxBodySize.mdx still contains a reference to "middleware" in the explanation text while the title and other references have been updated to "proxy". For consistency, the opening sentence should be updated to "When proxy is used..." instead of "When middleware is used...".

This PR removes middleware docs and adds a "Migration to Proxy" section to the Proxy docs, which explains the rationale for the renaming to Proxy and provides a migration guide.
