Netflix Heartstopper star says Season 3 will explore sexuality rarely seen on TV

Heartstopper's Tobie Donovan has teased his character's journey in the upcoming third season, sharing that the hit Netflix drama will dive deeper into a sexuality rarely depicted on-screen

Heartstopper actor Tobie Donovan has revealed that the upcoming third season will delve into a sexuality rarely represented on TV.

The hit Netflix series, adapted from graphic novels of the same name, follows the love story of school boys Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor). Beyond its lead characters, the show also portrays a diverse group of young LGBTQ+ teens.

Tobie's character, Isaac, is a wallflower whose sexuality was unconfirmed in the first season of the coming-of-age drama.

In season two, however, Isaac discovers his asexuality, and the actor has teased that the new season will dig deeper into his journey of self-discovery.

Appearing on the official Heartstopper podcast with his co-star Rhea Norwood and Drag Queen Tia Kofi, Tobie shared what viewers can expect in the upcoming episodes. "Isaac has a real journey of learning to love and accept his asexuality and a-romanticism. Which is a thing that we don't see on TV very often, so it's really cool to represent that and to get to be that voice for a group of people that might not see themselves on TV otherwise. "

He continued, saying: "I hope that people see themselves in it."

Tobie also spoke about his preparation for the character's arc. He said: "There's a lot of pressure to get it right because there's not been anything like it. But I did the research and worked as hard as I could on making it feel authentic and I hope people enjoy it."

Rhea has also hinted at her character, Imogen's, development in the upcoming episodes, saying "There is some drunken snogging." She also answered a fan question about what items she must have on set and revealed that she always has her headphones.

Rhea told the podcast: "I love listening to music and I always have a playlist for my character in each season [with] songs that trace a similar journey to what my character is doing."

She added that she listened to the Billie Eilish hit, What Was I Made For, when prepping for sad scenes.
