Introducing the Next Generation of Heroku Postgres – Unlocking Performance, Scale, and Zero-Friction Ops
- Last Updated: October 14, 2025
We are thrilled to announce the next generation of Heroku Postgres to power a data foundation for the next wave of intelligent and mission-critical applications. This roadmap has been driven by listening closely to our customers, culminating in the introduction of a new Heroku Postgres Advanced tier. This revolutionary data foundation is designed to eliminate previous scaling limits, unlock unprecedented architectural flexibility and performance, and reduce operational friction. As the AI PaaS from Salesforce, Heroku is the force multiplier for developers building this future with an integrated platform with powerful capabilities made simple to use – removing friction along the software delivery lifecycle. We invite you to sign up for the pilot.
Heroku Postgres has a long history of enabling the most demanding workloads, from HealthSherpa’s high volume during peak enrollment periods of over 1200 requests and 30,000 queries per second to the Salesforce Data Migration Team’s ability to transform complex data processing from weeks to minutes.
Today’s announcement builds on a year of data innovations from replatforming new Essential-tier plans to delivering innovative new capabilities like streamlining upgrades.
Postgres Advanced: Heroku’s innovation layer for scale, speed and reliability
The Heroku Postgres Advanced tier is built on the latest database technologies from AWS through a collaboration with the AWS data team. Heroku transforms that robust underlying database technology by adding innovative capabilities, a superior developer experience, and operational automation. The result is a powerful managed data service that offers simplicity, reliability, and non-disruptive, zero-downtime scaling for massive scale environments.
What’s new in Heroku Postgres:
- High performance and scalability: The new architecture is built for demanding applications. We’ve seen over 4X throughput during initial tests, and it introduces high storage scalability, allowing over 200TB of storage. This immense capacity ensures that your database can grow seamlessly alongside your business, accommodating ever-increasing data volumes and throughput without compromising performance. Furthermore, Postgres Advanced dramatically increases connection capacity, ensuring your application can handle concurrent users at scale.
- Compute and storage flexibility: We’ve decoupled compute and storage to allow complete flexibility in how you configure and consume database resources, including high-availability standby, to match the specific needs of the application at any time. This architecture shift provides increased vertical and horizontal scaling and flexibility to support more complex customer data architectures.
- Proprietary follower pool architecture: Achieve superior read performance and operational agility. This unique Heroku innovation allows you to organize your database topology by attaching named follower pools to specific applications for effortless read distribution and horizontal or vertical scaling of replicas without disrupting the applications. This ensures your scaling operations are non-disruptive to achieve zero-downtime and maintain optimal performance during peak load.
- Refreshed user experience: We’re committed to enhancing the intuitive UX that Heroku is known for. Postgres Advanced will feature a new and intuitive interface in the UI dashboard and CLI that is interactive and easily scales.

The next generation of data is here. Join the pilot.
We are excited to have you try the pilot and get your feedback. Your involvement is critical; over the course of the pilot we will continue to update the product with more features, both familiar and new – including full support for our customers that require regulatory compliance. You can expect the General Availability (GA) in early 2026. Following GA, we will provide tooling enabling you to migrate your existing database seamlessly. This new Heroku Postgres Advanced tier will eventually replace our existing Standard, Premium, Private and Shield tiers.
