Harris Dickinson’s past roles explained as Urchin lands in cinemas

Urchin has been hailed as one of the best independent film of 2025, but where else have you seen its writer and director Harris Dickinson?

Rising star Harris Dickinson has wowed critics with his gritty directorial debut, Urchin.

The London-born actor is no stranger to the big screen, having fronted a major erotic thriller opposite Nicole Kidman just last year. But Dickinson has now made his mark as a writer and director with the new dramedy, which has just landed in cinemas.

Starring fellow British star Frank Dillane, the film follows Mike (Dillane), a young addict living on the streets of London. After a particularly rough period of crime and violence, Mike seems to finally escape his hopeless cycle. However, according to the synopsis, his new path "curdles into a strange odyssey from which he may never escape".

Despite being Dickinson's first turn as a filmmaker, while also playing a supporting role, Urchin has received overwhelming praise.

Rotten Tomatoes critics have granted the film a stellar 97 per cent rating, with one dubbing it "one of the year’s best independent British films".

As the 29-year-old star basks in the critical acclaim, here's a look at his career so far.

Where you've seen Harris Dickinson before

Dickinson first came to prominence in Eliza Hittman's 2017 drama Beach Rats, in which he played a troubled teenager exploring his sexuality. Since then, the Londoner has appeared in Ruben Östlund's highly praised dark comedy Triangle of Sadness; Sean Durkin's sports biopic The Iron Claw; and Steve McQueen's war drama Blitz, alongside Saoirse Ronan.

In 2022, he also starred in hit thriller Where the Crawdads Sing, an adaptation of Delia Owens' bestselling novel of the same name.

Newer fans will recognise the celebrated director for playing Samuel in Halina Reijn's Babygirl. The sultry psychological thriller sees Dickinson in a heated affair with his boss, played by Nicole Kidman.
